Work Flex ‘Produces Results,’ Says SHRM CEO

The Families and Work Institute (FWI), a partner of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) since 2011, celebrated its 25th anniversary June 18, 2014, with a gala in New York City.

FWI is known for its ground-breaking research looking at the interconnectedness of work and family life. It conducts the ongoing National Study of the Changing Workforce and National Study of Employers, which businesses use to understand and respond to emerging workforce trends, and it helped plan the White House Forum on Workplace Flexibility and the upcoming White House Forum on Working Families. 

In April, during SHRM’s Talent Management Conference & Exposition in Nashville, FWI released its 2014 version of the National Study of Employers, which Ken Matos, FWI’s director of research described in a news release as “the most comprehensive and far-reaching study of the practices, policies, programs and benefits provided by U.S. employers in response to the changing workforce and the changing nature of work itself.”

The pre-eminent think tank’s research has shown “that workplace flexibility was no longer just a nice thing to do. [It] could show it produces results—positive results—for businesses,” said Henry G. “Hank” Jackson, SHRM president and CEO, in a video extolling FWI’s work.

In February 2011, SHRM and FWI joined in a multi-year partnership called Moving Work Forward. A key aim, SHRM Online reported, was “to transform the way organizations view and adopt workplace flexibility, helping them to become more competitive.”

The partnership has built on the When Work Works initiative FWI created in 2005 to administer the prestigious Alfred P. Sloan Awards. The award annually recognizes employers of all sizes for their approaches to using workplace flexibility as an effective strategy to increase business and employee success.

The award was created, Jackson explained in the video, “to codify some of the best practices ... not only pull together some of the best ideas but to show some of the numerous options out there” for workplace flexibility.
