SHRM Named Great Place to Work

News Updates

Washingtonian magazine has selected the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) for its 2013 list of 50 Great Places to Work in the Washington, D.C., area.

“We are thrilled to be named one of the Washington area’s top employers,” said Henry G. “Hank” Jackson, SHRM president and CEO. “SHRM educates HR professionals and employers on workplace best practices. So we are gratified for the recognition that SHRM ‘walks the talk.’ ”

A panel of the magazine’s editors picked SHRM after examining entries from 200 Washington-area employers. The panel based its selections for the prestigious list on criteria such as pay and benefits, challenging and interesting work, work/life balance, professional development opportunities, commitment to charity and community, and respect given to employees. Information collected from more than 13,000 employee surveys weighed heavily in the final decision.

SHRM has a lower employee turnover rate than many organizations, and the association offers exceptional benefits that help meet the interests and needs of employees and the association’s business objectives. These benefits include:

  • A minimum 20 hours of professional development and training each year.
  • A bonus structure for all employees, including hourly workers.
  • Flexible work arrangements such as telecommuting and compressed workweeks.
  • Employee-run interest groups, including a diversity action committee and Toastmasters.
  • Participation in charity events.
  • Lunches with executives to mark employees’ anniversaries.
  • Employee-to-employee financial recognition awards for excellent work.
  • Company summer picnic and holiday party.

This marks the second time SHRM has been part of Washingtonian’s Great Places to Work list. The magazine also featured the association in its 2003 list. SHRM and the other 2013 winners—comprising private employers, nonprofits and government agencies—will be featured in the December issue of Washingtonian.

SHRM is the world’s largest association for the HR management profession, and the Society, combined with its affiliates—the SHRM Foundation, the HR Certification Institute, the Council for Global Immigration and HR People & Strategy—employs more than 400 people at its headquarters in Alexandria, Va., and at offices in China, India and the United Arab Emirates.
