High-Tech Doesn’t Replace High-Touch in Recruiting: Why Traditional Methods Still Matter
For some time, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter have been the “big three” of social media, but a new and very powerful player has changed the social media landscape: Google+. Already overwhelmed with the multiple options and rapidly expanding time and resource commitments required to remain relevant across multiple communication channels, HR consultants now find themselves faced with a big decision—stick with LinkedIn or become engaged with Google+? Or both?
The HR Consultant’s Perspective
There are now five generations in the workplace, and boy, don’t we know it. Seems like you can hardly pick up an HR- or business-related publication these days without some reference to one of these groups: the Traditionalists (1925-45), the Baby Boomers (1946-64), Gen X (1965-80), Gen Y or Millennials (1981-95), and Generation Zen (1996-present).
A university chooses to hire a native English-speaking male professor, instead of a Taiwanese female professor whose command of the English language is limited.
An upscale women’s-clothing retailer makes hiring choices, in part, on how “good-looking” the applicants are.
A mom and pop restaurant will not hire anyone who might be seen by patrons if he or she has visible tattoos.
At this point in the 21st century, if you’re not actively engaged in social media to help boost your practice, you’re missing out. While not all tools will be appropriate for all HR consultants, there are three in particular that deserve a look: LinkedIn, Twitter and YouTube.
Face it: Most HR consultants are not natural salespeople. But in order to nurture and maintain a thriving practice, they must continue to feed the pipeline with prospects and work to turn those prospects into customers. Here’s how.
Building a Network
Networking today has been augmented and affected by the Internet and social media. But consultants can’t overlook the power of face-to-face networking. Most are finding that a combination of the old and the new generates the best results.
The Old
By now, even the latest adopters among HR consultants have at least dipped their toes in the social media ocean. Whether using Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube or other tools that seem to be continually emerging, HR consultants are finding that social media offers opportunities to expand their networks, build their credibility and even increase business.
