Too many companies’ interviewing tactics are hurting their chances of rooting out top performers, said Geoff Smart and Alan Foster during their keynote session at the Staffing World 2014 conference, held Oct. 13-15 near Washington, D.C. But a multitude of common hiring mistakes can be corrected if staffing professionals and hiring managers simplify their interviewing process.

Recent spate of mass layoffs hasn’t eased tight competition for industry talent. 

Some observers might use the word “tumultuous” to describe the state of staffing in the IT sector, which is still reeling from announcements at Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard of impending downsizings.

In July the sector recorded a 49 percent increase in job cuts from June, making July’s layoff total the second highest of the year, according to a report released July 31, 2014, by global outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc.

While planned layoffs fell to their lowest level in three months in September, U.S.-based employers announced plans to reduce payrolls by 40,289, according to the latest report on monthly job cuts, released Oct. 3, 2013, by global outplacement consultancy Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. That figure represents a 20 percent drop from August but is 19 percent higher than the job cuts announced in September 2012. This is the fourth consecutive month in which job cutting was heavier than a year ago.

And they are not alone: With one in eight new workers employed during a 12-month period having proved to be a bad hire, many employers that DDI surveyed also are questioning whether they have made wise hiring decisions, according to the study.
