Whew!  I made through SHRM22!  I networked (so many people), I connected (and reconnected), I learned (a lot), I ate (too much), I drank (just enough), I danced (badly), I had a terrifying ghostly experience at my hotel (but that’s for another blog).  So now what?

Many moons ago, as a young single mother of two children, I began looking to pursue a degree, and the options for online learning were minimal then. The University of Phoenix literally saved the day! The experience was so amazing, I went all the way through to my Master's degree. Without their flexible learning options, I would have never been able to do it! I am a “Phoenix” and proud of it!  Please enjoy my “interview” with the University of Phoenix!

Who is the University of Phoenix?

While I certainly would prefer being in person at the 2021 SHRM Annual Conference and Expo, it’s just not possible for me this year. I’ll be sad I don’t get the chance to jump off the Stratosphere again, however, what an amazing opportunity virtual attendance provides. I can experience the conference in a whole different way!

Reports are not data analytics. Reports are snapshots of data gathered into informational summaries. A good example of a report is a turnover report. Seeing turnover rates across locations, departments, etc., brings to our attention overall trends and may point to an issue in need of closer attention.

I spent several years as an HRIS and Quality Manager. In this role, I was often asked to “pull numbers” on retention, turnover, benefits usage, 401k participation, and click activity on jobs in our ATS. HR departments have a tradition of collecting lots of HR data. However, this data often remains unused. As soon as your organization starts solving their people problems by using data, they are engaged in people analytics.

September 26 is #HumanResourceProfessionalDay.

Every day, HR professionals positively impact the lives of employees in workplaces around the world and contribute to the business strategy that allows their organizations to compete, grow and thrive.

We asked our bloggers to share their HR stories.

As I was walking though the Exposition Hall at the 2019 SHRM Annual Conference & Exposition yesterday evening, I heard (more than once) conference attendees complaining about the sponsors trying to “sell them” and how irritated they were that they were approached for a conversation.

Yep, you read that right.  In fact, 1 of 3 adults (of 75 million Americans) have a criminal record.  Before you Google me and try to figure out the story, and in the spirit of keeping it “real” let me share.

You may not know this about me, but I’m a huge music enthusiast who has been the lead singer of a cover band! So, I was “geeked” to talk to mega session speaker Steve Browne – a fellow music freak. Little did I know that our conversation would lead to life lessons and the power of positivity!

A Jobvite’s recruiting survey found that 83 percent of respondents used or planned to use social networking this year as a recruitment tool.  Over 600 human resources professionals completed Jobvite’s online survey, and not to much surprise, the big sites referenced were LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter.

In most working environments, there are no hand-written rules surrounding proper email etiquette. Many of us know to avoid the obvious: politically incorrect cartoons, offensive video content, unforgiving language and other questionable materials.
