SHRMLead just finished, it was a wonderful two days in Boston meeting great HR professionals and speakers.

The weather was chilly, the food was delicious, and the conversations flowed. I’m thankful to receive the chance to attend SHRMLead, along with Carlos and Claire, as part of the SHRMLead Bloggers Trio!

I’m already missing the SHRM18 Conference in Chicago! So many great memories made and ideas for speaking, hopefully SHRM2020!

The conference provided me with so many opportunities for my job and my personal brand (Smirk). It always goes by way too fast, but the amount of knowledge and connections I’ve gained makes it worth every penny.

SHRM18 is coming, we are less than 100 days from boarding our planes or getting in our cars to travel to Chicago and embarking on a new year of networking and learning from the speakers and vendors during the conference.

Believing in yourself and your skills is important in any career field. You want to be the very best at the job you’re doing at all times. As an HR Newbie, there will be a lot of challenges while you’re learning the job, the workforce, the company, and upgrading your skills.

You’d think this is something I wouldn’t need to write about, but unfortunately, I do. I’ve said it many times that SHRM18 will be big and the McCormick Place is even bigger! With that comes the need to have volunteers to help us find our way.

Welcome back to the SHRM18 First Time Attendee Series, this time around I want to talk with you about the different sessions of SHRM18. Before my first conference last year, I was confused as to what I could and could not attend (I have the biggest fear of walking into a room and not belonging, but that’s another story). SHRM National Conference has a few different session types on the SHRM Annual Conference Site.

The SHRM18 Bloggers and attendees can’t stop talking about the 2018 SHRM Annual Conference & Exposition. There is something new coming out every day, almost every few hours! Because I was a first-time attendee to the SHRM National Conference last year, I want to help other first-time attendees prepare for the SHRM18 Conference! So here’s the start of the SHRM18 First Time Attendee Series, let’s jump into the fun!

My last vacation of 2017 was pretty amazing. It was my very first real vacation that wasn’t over a weekend in the last two years. I can’t believe how much rest I got or how much I didn’t want to go back to work. Don’t get me wrong, I missed my job, and couldn’t wait to figure out what I’d missed, but taking a midweek vacation had to be my worst decision, lol.

HR Professionals are awesome in many ways. We do great work, for majority of us, we do it not because it’s a job, but because it is truly what we love. Unfortunately, even the greatest HR professional can have down falls, and one might be, not being able to communicate effectively.

Learning to communicate is a key skill for HR professionals, but we sometimes forget one part of communication. Listening.

Getting a new boss and coworkers can be overwhelming for new HR professionals – and seasoned ones too. There are certain expectations and emotions people feel when they land that job and over time they are either met or found elsewhere. In your organization, while you might not have direct contact with your boss on a day to day basis, it is still important that you both learn certain things about each other, professionally and personally.

Rule #2 – Don’t Get Drunk at the Holiday Party

Just continue replaying the rules over and over again and you’re halfway there.

Have you ever had one of those days when you’re never not busy? Everyone has a need or want that must be met asap? The day is getting shorter, but your to-do list is getting longer? Ha, who am I kidding, we’re HR Pros, that’s every day.
I’ve had one of those days this entire week.

After the #SHRM17 conference, I had a lot of time to think about how I could create change in the workplace. However, I haven’t been in my role for a very long time with my company and I’m not exactly sure how to create change in an environment that is already built.
