Meanwhile, lawmakers are wrapping-up their respective party retreats to set forth their legislative agendas.  Now the focus is on priority issues for the remainder of the 115th Congress, including many that will impact the workplace.

Christmas tree fires account for an average of 200 house fires every year and 37% of those occur in January. I am reminded this time of year that it is time to check the batteries in my smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detector. Early in my career I was part of the team that treated patients after they had been exposed to the colorless and odorless carbon monoxide gas.

October was designated as National Work and Family Month by the U.S. Senate in 2003. This month is a good time for HR professionals to reflect and consider innovation with programs to help reconcile work-life issues.

Nearly a quarter of US workers did some or all of their work from home in 2016 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics [1], but corporate attitudes about remote work may be cooling. Citing a need to increase control over the workday and promote team collaboration, big companies such as IBM, Yahoo and the Wall Street Journal have recently reined in remote work programs.

The days of 9 to 5 cubicle jobs are over. 
 
The new generation of workers places a high value on flexibility in a job. But, that doesn’t mean they don’t work hard, or expect not to have to show up at the office. 
 
It means most younger workers expect to have meaningful lives both in and outside of work, and want to harness the flexibility that technology provides.
