I work very hard at what I do with every client, presentation, and article I write. Some may call me an overachiever. I work long hours, solve complex problems and do it all with a passion and smile most days. I love what I d0, but not everyone loves me back.
Hate is a very strong word. It’s an emotion, a feeling. Tied very closely to love and lust. So why do organizations, leaders, and co-workers hate overachievers?

Whole Foods Employees Vote for New Hires
Every new hire at a Whole Foods store is subject to a peer-based selection process. The newbie is provisionally assigned to a team, for example in bakery or produce, pending a 4-week trial and a team vote. After the trial period, that team votes on the newbie’s suitability and ultimately his or her fate. A two-thirds majority vote is needed to achieve a full-time slot on the team.

NEW YORK—It wasn’t difficult spotting Todd Corley, chief diversity officer for clothier Abercrombie & Fitch (A&F), at Working Mother Media’s 2011 Multicultural Women’s National Conference held here July 20, 2011.

In January, Walgreens unveiled a career development and training site, but it was already a known entity to a significant portion of the employee base. A hundred employee volunteers designed the tool exactly to their liking. Let me tell you how the project came about.

A growing number of employees are using online simulations to role-play challenging scenarios, practice job skills and attend virtual meetings by logging on to web sites. In some cases, simulations in virtual worlds save companies huge sums that would have been spent trying to re-create job conditions in the real world.
In an American Psychological Association survey conducted last summer, nearly 75 percent of respondents said they were stressed to unhealthy levels. More than 3,000 adults and young people were polled by Harris Interactive for the association’s 2010 Stress in America survey. Respondents’ top concerns were money, work and the economy.
In another survey of workplaces, conducted in November 2009, researchers reported that stressed-out workers call in sick more often and use more health insurance benefits.

In earlier generations of workers, an unspoken, sink-or-swim approach to on-the-job training was often good enough to bring new employees up to speed. Yet that approach might be less effective with those from the Millennial or Generation Y demographic, a group raised with different expectations and work styles.
