Each year as National Volunteer Week approaches we think about how to express our gratitude to our 6,000+ SHRM Volunteer Leaders—each year this task seems more difficult than the year before.

SHRM Volunteer Leaders give their time, hard work, dedication, passion and heart to advancing the HR profession and for that we are eternally grateful. During this National Volunteer Week 2018 we wanted to find a special way to express our thanks.

View the video below—our thanks to the amazing, talented and selfless SHRM volunteers.

As the year begins to wind to a close and the holiday season grows near, the SHRM Foundation asked attendees at last week’s SHRM Volunteer Leaders Summit to share what they are thankful for this year. Many attendees shared their thankfulness for family, friends, and their health. Many attendees gave a shout-out to fellow SHRM state council and volunteer leaders who dedicate their time and talents to support local HR professionals in their communities.

Each year, SHRM State Directors elect a regional representative to join the Membership Advisory Council (“MAC”) and to be a liaison between the SHRM members and the Board of Directors. The MAC meets in person with the Board to discuss issues that affect our membership. I was reminded recently that the MAC members hold the highest volunteer roles at SHRM.  Why do we do it?  To explain, let’s talk about a fruit and a nut.

Elissa O’Brien is not only SHRM’s VP of Membership and Member Relations, she’s a life-long HR pro who’s grown up through SHRM’s volunteer ranks.  Through that shared experience she’s learned one very important fact:  SHRM could not serve its members or the profession without the thousands of volunteers who serve SHRM.  In celebrating National Volunteer Week, here’s a short video from Elissa to all of SHRM’s invaluable volunteers.  We couldn’t do it without you!

I have had the privilege of working with Shauneen for many years in her volunteer capacity for a variety of leadership roles in Oregon state. She has been involved in her local chapter since the early 2000s, was chapter president from 2010 to 2011, and again took over the reins as chapter president from 2014 to the present.

As many of the membership team, in my prior life as an HR practitioner I was also volunteer leader for SHRM.  I’ve met many wonderful people throughout that timeframe, but one that rises to the top of the list is Becky Golden, SHRM-SCP.

Each year the SHRM Foundation anxiously awaits the arrival of almost 1,000 SHRM volunteer leaders for SHRM’s Volunteer Leaders’ Summit. For us, it is a chance to connect, share our gratitude for their continued support, and share about all of the SHRM Foundation opportunities available for their members.

Each year we leave SHRM VLS feeling inspired, empowered and transformed by the conversations we have and the incredible people we’ve met.

For the last sixteen years, I have had the honor and privilege to work with and serve SHRM volunteers from 20 different states (not all at once!).  I know that our 6,000 volunteer leaders have made SHRM a more successful, more impactful, and larger association than we could have been without them.  We owe our volunteers a great deal.  The Volunteer Leaders’ Summit is one way we say thank you.

Time and again I’m reminded of how invaluable the more than 6,000 SHRM Volunteer Leaders are to both our organization, and our HR profession!  But, perhaps no time is this commitment and passion more evident than during our annual Volunteer Leaders’ Summit held each November here in Washington, DC.

My role with the SHRM Foundation is to support SHRM chapters and state councils in their efforts to share about the SHRM Foundation.  I can often be found with a phone next to my ear, chatting with volunteers in our office on calls with chapter and state council leadership. And I can say that I am one of the lucky few that get to spend my days chatting with some of the best volunteers in the country.

National Volunteer Week is underway and the SHRM Foundation wants to take a few moments to say THANK YOU to all of our many valuable volunteers!

Our amazing volunteer have shared that their desire to “give back” is second nature and the act of volunteering is just part of who they are. When we reached out to our volunteers to better understand what made them inclined to volunteer the responses were varied but similar,
