The April 2015 data breach of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, which exposed the personal information of millions of government employees, had major implications for HR departments worldwide. The breach compelled employers everywhere to question the safety of their data and the strength of their own network security system.

Home Depot’s compromised payment systems could turn out to be the biggest data breach of its kind, with as many as 60 million credit cards affected, according to experts. That would be far more than the 40 million cardholders impacted by the breach at Target stores in 2013. The company confirmed the breach Sept. 8, 2014.

Plaintiffs’ lawyers were falling over themselves last week in a race to the courthouse to sue Target as a result of its recent data breach. By at least one report, over 40 lawsuits have already been filed against Target, the first of which was filed the day after the breach became public.
