Congrats – You’ve been promoted!  Oftentimes, when you accept a new role at your current company, you will find yourself caught between your old duties and your new duties.  As in any new role, there is likely a defined transition period - typically between 2-3 weeks.  But what happens when your old team comes to you on day 2 of your new role and asks you to take care of something for them?  It’s important to understand when and how to say no to your old team.

This past week I had a very cool experience !! I was one of the judges for the SHRM Student Case Study competition. I sat with two other great HR pros from the area as we heard graduate students from various schools give their take on an HR scenario. It was very cool to hear their approaches which ranged from a traditional HR viewpoint to some that were extremely creative.

University of Toledo SHRM (UT-SHRM) has participated in the SHRM Case Competition since 2011.  Each year, we have taken an undergraduate and graduate team. The Case Competition is the highlight of our year, and each year, previous participants share their learning experiences with new SHRM members.

I start this post as I hurdle along at 501 mph in seat 30C over the skies of Ohio on my way to the 2014 SHRM Annual Conference in Orlando.  It occurs to me that I am very fortunate in so many ways in life and this certainly counts as one of them.

In a few weeks, I will be heading to Orlando, Florida for the SHRM Annual Conference. To say that I’m Geeked would be an undersatement !!  It’s a chance to break away from the daily norms and be with 14,000+ of my HR peers.  Some may find that overwhelming while I see it as welcoming.

We learn life lessons throughout our lives. Sometimes the lessons are from our own mistakes, from being inquisitive, and other times we learn from others.  Often, the lessons are unexpected.  I recently watched a video of Sam Bern, an amazing 17 year old young man who suffered from Progeria, an extremely rare disease which causes rapid aging and various other side effects.
