Some time ago, after I graduated with my undergraduate degree, I was lucky enough to get a job working for the governor of Nevada (see, internships can pay off!). I was also fortunate to have a great boss (the governor himself) who impressed upon me how important it is to start saving for retirement, even at the tender age of 22. I started saving early because I was able to make a small contribution with my modest salary. Had I been saddled with huge amounts of student loan debt, that wouldn’t have been possible.

The days of 9 to 5 cubicle jobs are over. 
The new generation of workers places a high value on flexibility in a job. But, that doesn’t mean they don’t work hard, or expect not to have to show up at the office. 
It means most younger workers expect to have meaningful lives both in and outside of work, and want to harness the flexibility that technology provides.

When it comes to office conduct, we’ve come a long way from the Mad Men era when a whiskey or three throughout the day and a peck on a coworker’s cheek were all part of the status quo. Now, behavior like that is guaranteed to lead to a slap on the wrist, if not a flat-out termination.

According to statistics from the U.S. Department of Labor, hiring is at a 10-year high, with Americans getting jobs at rates unheard of since the start of the great recession. Job seekers are now back in the driver’s seat, having to juggle two, three or even four job offers.

Over the past couple of years, Millennials have become the largest generation in the workplace. A new analysis by SHRM titled “Millennials: Misunderstood in the Workplace?” reports that Millennials will represent over one-half of the workforce by 2020. Keep in mind, that’s just a couple years away.
