I love reading books and watching shows and movies that were set back in the times of castles, kingdoms and mystical creatures. I’m a huge Lord of the Rings fan as well as the tales of King Arthur. It may also explain why my favorite movie is Monty Python and the Holy Grail !! In many of these tales, you find a gargantuan castle surrounded by a moat.

Coronavirus. It is nearly impossible to avoid the topic online, on TV, or at work. Gatherings are being canceled or postponed, employers are restricting travel, and organizations are deploying action plans to mitigate the impact of COVID-19.

Last week, two celebrities took their lives, Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain.  To be more specific, they committed suicide.

It is important to say the word “suicide” because many media reports, at least initially, did not.  There is still, for some, discomfort with mental health issues in general and suicide in particular.

The other night, I attended DisruptHR Philadelphia. I loved every minute of it. The networking, the speakers, the free-flowing stream of f-bombs, it just flat-out rocked. One of the speakers, Vadim Liberman (@VadimsViews), spoke about authenticity and the need to help our people be not just their true selves, but their best selves. This ignited some inner dialogue about my role in HR.

May is a bittersweet month for me. I was born in Speedway, Indiana, home of the Indianapolis 500. If you are not familiar with this event, it is the single most attended sporting event in the world and it is run the Sunday before Memorial Day. Also, most importantly, my first daughter was born in May. On race day. Nope, I can’t even make that up.

Three years ago, my good friend took his own life.

I remember that morning like it was yesterday. The feelings of disbelief, sadness, anger, and loss. I also had a feeling of helplessness. As an HR professional, I am very good at helping others to cope with loss, stress and pain, but I had never been in a position to help myself. And for the first time in my career, I did what I recommend countless times per week. I called my company's EAP.

May is Mental Health Month. I have written about this for the past few years and I will continue to write about it.

The month of May has always been my favorite month of the year. I was born and raised in Speedway, Indiana, and if you don't know about this small town, it is famous for the Indianapolis 500. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the lifeblood of the town and community and it will always hold a special place in my heart.

May is Mental Health Month. It’s an opportunity to have a conversation about an issue that affects every single American and to help people find treatment they may need, and emphasize the importance of workplace wellness in May and every month of the year.

The truth is though; we shouldn’t just talk about mental health one month a year. Unlike so many illnesses, Americans don’t talk about mental health over the course of the year—or ever, really. That needs to change.
