At many small companies and startups, the human resources department consists of one person – a “generalist” who must do it all. These HR professionals – also known as an “HR Department of One” or “HR DOO” – must handle every HR function for the entire organization including recruiting, onboarding, training, compensation, benefits, employee relations, compliance, technology and analytics.

I receive more networking requests from HR practitioners at the start of a new year than any other time. Most of them reach out because they are on the hunt for something new and wonder if I can help.

I love this question. I love philosophizing about these things. Playing out the “on the one hand” scenario. I’m one of those weirdos who enjoys playing out possible scenarios in an effort to figure out which might work out the best. Because with this question as with many others the answer is a frustrating one.
