Last weekend, 1,500 people gathered in Seattle for the Hopperx1 Seattle, a local Grace Hopper celebration of women in technology.

Seattle is home to many of the world’s largest tech companies. While the overall workforce is comprised of (roughly) 50 percent women, in technology, the ratios are very different – approximately 25 percent of the tech workforce is made up of women.

Change is hard and can make us uncomfortable. That may be why 80 percent of New Year’s resolutions fail in the first week alone. But, change is upon us and it is here to stay.

Every year, the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) adds hundreds of new words. This year, they added the term “gender-fluid.”

On some of the world’s most visible stages, women appear to be making huge professional strides. In the U.S., we had our first female presidential candidate from a major party and the U.K. chose its second female prime minister. Women are outnumbering men by a 3-to-2 ratio on college campuses, and they have earned more doctoral degrees than men for seven straight years. Even at this year’s Summer Olympics, the U.S. fielded a team of athletes made up of a female majority for the first time.

Last month, a study on gender and leadership conducted jointly by LeanIn.Org and McKinsey & Co. was published.  Accordingly to the study, women account for only 19 percent of the C-suite executives (based on responses from 132 companies).

Like many of you- so much of my life’s lessons have been informed by my experience with sports. Intestinal fortitude, teamwork, and humility (a hard and often experienced one) all quickly come to mind. Yet, what struck me yesterday as I watched my oldest son’s soccer game was how a group of 8th grade girls and boys, all playing on the same field is more powerful than any lesson more than 40-years of sports taught me.
