When employees observe workplace misconduct such as stealing, safety violations or substance abuse—and decide to report it—most will go to their supervisors to do so, an ethics survey finds.


Sixty percent of the 2,172 workers surveyed in June 2012 by the Ethics Resource Center (ERC), a nonpartisan nonprofit organization, said they will report misconduct they observe to their supervisor first. About one in five (21 percent) will report to higher management and about one in 10 (11 percent) will call a hotline. Just 1 percent will go first to an outside agency.

When Jerry Sandusky was still employed by Penn State as a football coach in 1998 and was accused of child abuse, several men—including President Graham Spanier, Senior Vice President-Finance and Business Gary Schultz, Athletic Director Timothy Curley and Head Football Coach Joe Paterno—concealed the accusation from the university board of trustees, according to a July 12, 2012, report by Louis Freeh, an attorney with Freeh Sporkin & Sullivan LLP, former judge and former director of the FBI.

Gov. Martin O’Malley, on May 2, 2012, signed S.B. 433, a bill prohibiting employers from requesting the social media passwords or accessing the social media accounts of prospective and current employees, making Maryland the first state to pass such a law.

The new provision, which will take effect Oct. 1, 2012, bars employers from requesting or requiring that an employee or applicant for employment disclose any user name, password or other means to access a “personal account or service” through an electronic communications device.

The National Labor Relations Board stresses that employees must be able to discuss their jobs freely.

The National Labor Relations Board, which helps administer the provisions of the National Labor Relations Act, believes that social-media policies are overly broad if they unfairly restrict employees -- union or non-union -- from engaging in protected concerted activity. In simple English, if employees can't discuss their jobs with one another, the Board has a problem.

The experiment took place in an elevator in what appears to be an office building.  Without knowing they were being filmed, each subject walked into an elevator with complete strangers.

Yes, you read that right. Wait a minute, you think, “This must be about that extra 15 pounds I’m carrying around.” Nope. “Well, maybe it’s because I always seem to quit on my New Year’s resolutions in the first two weeks.” Wrong again. “Wait a minute, how does he know that I cut out early sometimes when the boss is away?!” I wish it were that insignificant a problem.

Public radio host Lisa Simeone, on Oct. 20, 2011, told the Baltimore Sunthat she had been fired by the public radio series "Soundprint" because series executives saw her work as a spokeswoman for one of the groups involved in the Occupy DC movement as a violation of the series’ producer’s ethical code.
