Coaching in the workplace – it’s not just for executives anymore.
I asked a team of internal coaches, “What advice would you give aspiring coaches?” These are people who navigate traditional job responsibilities and coach employees as well.
I’ve been working with some of the team for a little over a year. Others have been part of the process for about six months. Many have been internal coaches for several years.
I asked them to reflect on their whole coaching experience and offer advice to internal coaches.
Sports psychologist Stan Beecham has learned a few things from working with elite leaders and athletes. One is that top performers train themselves to control their thoughts—and eventually their habits. Beecham, a founding member of the Leadership Resource Center in Atlanta, has worked with collegiate, Olympic and professional athletes.
“Johnson, don’t think! Just do what I tell you!”
I tell my friend this as I train him for his second half marathon. He was so bad in the first one, that I begged him to let me train him for the second one. He agreed! Now I hear myself saying things that my high school track coach used to say to me.
“Dooley, other people clear the hurdles because they do what I say. Don’t think. Just do what I say!”
The back-to-school season is upon us once again. You can see it in the stores as aisles and aisles of supplies are displayed. Backpacks, notebooks, laptops, pencils and pens, etc.
My two “kids” are now adults and in various stages of college. My wife and I are very fortunate that we have such incredible kids. We don’t ever overlook that. Our son is going to be a sophomore at Ohio University (proud Bobcat Dad alum !!), and our daughter is in graduate school at the University of Indianapolis.
Don’t “Yelp” your employees. “YouTube” them!
Let me explain.
Yelp is a great social media site that many use basically to review restaurants. Don’t get me wrong. Yelp does and attempts to do a whole lot more than that, but basically, it’s the site many of us use to find ideas for and reviews of restaurants.
How to become the best? It’s something that has crossed the mind of virtually everyone. From self-help books to motivational speakers, an entire industry has flourished for centuries.
