Option A is the employee's life with the loved one. Option B is surviving without him or her.

We all know that employees do not leave their personal selves at the workplace door. The experiences we have outside of work inform who we are at work.
That is why we spend so much effort--or we should--on helping develop a culture that makes it easier for employees to manage work and life. But, there is one part of life that is often left out: death.

“Call me ASAP.”
It was Monday morning and I had just finished a meeting while getting settled on a trip to St. Louis when I received that text. It was from the head executive of the group I support in Chicago. As I dialed his number, a few things went through my mind. Either somebody resigned or there was an urgent employee relations issue, but nothing prepared me for what I was about to hear. One of our employees had died.

The recent announcement about Sheryl Sandberg being unable to join us in Las Vegas at SHRM’s Annual Conference is no doubt disappointing to a lot of people – myself included. But at the same time who can fault her for wanting to and needing to be with her family during this difficult time.
I have been reading a lot about the sudden passing of her husband, Dave Goldberg and it got me thinking about a lot of things. First the outpouring of condolences, thoughts and prayers from so many people that Sheryl and Dave both knew and did not know were wonderful to see.
