SHRM India: Continuous Evolution is a Key Factor for Success

According to ADP Research Institute’s 2016 Evolution of Work study conducted in 13 countries across North America, Europe, Latin America, and Asia-Pacific regions (including India), workplaces are evolving faster than before owing to five key trends driven by employee expectations - demand for greater choice and flexibility; access to real-time learning; increased autonomy; a sense of stability; and the ability to work on personally meaningful projects.

Another report titled The Evolution of Workplace in India reveals that there is a growing realization that a maturing, global Indian workforce needs a workplace that speaks to their ethos and mores. As the economic scenario evolves to knowledge-based work and employees come on board from diverse backgrounds, workplaces must respond to multicultural, multilingual, and multigenerational workforce.

Technology is another contemporary change that is changing the face of organizations and contributing to the workplace evolution significantly. Though there are a number of technological solutions available in the market, organizations often find it challenging to select and assess the right technology solution for your needs and more over build a strong business case.

While today’s organizations are now transforming at a swift pace owing to dynamic,  complex and tech-driven economy, evolution is not an intermittent phenomenon. As they say ‘the only constant thing is change’, workplaces have continuously evolved since the time their history can be traced. Only the reasons of evolution change. So, evolution is essentially a continuous process of growing and rising beyond expectations. It requires workplaces to extend their endless learning to embrace these changes.

Evolution has been always about Darwinism Theory – ‘the survival of the fittest’. So, the organizational leaders have only two options in evolution: adapt or die. Clearly, no organization wants to meet its end. In order to survive and thrive, leaders must transform from great to extraordinary partners for their organizations. They will require to develop a three-fold set of skills namely resilience, focus and open-mindedness. Only then, can they push the envelope, encourage continuous innovation, act nimbly to respond to business opportunities and threats, understand people behaviour dynamics, mould the traditional hierarchies into a flexible ladder, and create an environment where learning has no limits.

When leaders make evolution an ongoing progress to grow and extend their efforts beyond the ‘obvious’, they would be able to assure vitality and adaptation of an organization in the difficult times. At the same time, they would be also able to adopt processes, practices and policies that will change the employee mind-set to a positive one and foster a winning culture in the workplace.

What does it take organizations to create a culture that is continuously evolving to meet the changing times and motivates its people to rise above the expectations? How can leaders become great to extraordinary through continuous learning?
