Ask An Advisor: Help Your Employers by Helping Yourself

Over the past year, I have often been asked by various members of the HR community: With so many immediate changes in society, what can I do to best help my employer?

From insect invasions (murder hornets, cicadas and joro spiders, oh my!), to an entire pandemic, to the more-standard challenges of matters like voting legislation, mental and physical wellness, refugee crises, racial injustice, pay equity and gun violence, there has been plenty for HR to deal with over the past two years.

Employees are asking for different things. Employers’...

#SHRM22: Cause and Effect

I have a penchant for grammar. I like it. Diagraming sentences is a favorite. I even taught junior high English for a couple of years right after graduating with my BA from Saint Joseph’s University. One of the more common errors I found was students using “affect” when they meant “effect.” Time and again, I would tell the 8th Graders to ask themselves the question: Is what you’re describing the result of a cause?

As we work in human resources, we will be instruments affecting others’ lives. Our creation and enforcement of...

Why HR Should Champion Fair-Chance Hiring

Business leaders are looking to HR for strategies and innovations to address pressing talent-related challenges. Fair-chance hiring is a strategic, innovative solution to improve talent acquisition, retention, engagement, and DEI efforts.

What is fair-chance hiring?

It is the practice of assessing job candidates with criminal records on a case-by-case basis. It typically involves the Nature-Time-Nature test, which considers the nature of the offense, how long ago it occurred, and the nature of the specific role.

Why should HR champion fair-chance hiring?

By championing fair-chance hiring for your organization, you are bringing...

Empower Young Talent to Find Their Superpower

Giant segments of U.S. workers remain unsatisfied with their careers. Millennials and Generation Z’ers, which comprise a large majority of the workforce, often report feeling unfulfilled by their pay, career, and overall sense of purpose on-the-job. Many say they feel devalued and struggle with how to make their mark in business.

I’m often asked for advice from young professionals on the best way to excel and advance on-the-job. Hard work is important. But in today’s business environment, it’s not enough. That’s understandably frustrating since it runs counter to the belief that we’ve grown up with that “hard work pays off.”

I offer this wisdom as it’s...

#SHRM22 - Meet Me in New Orleans for Coffee & Beignets?

I have had the opportunity to visit New Orleans only once a few years ago, and by coincidence, it was for also for an annual conference, albeit for my wife’s profession. While she was spending most of her days at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center for her conference, I was able to explore the city and found it to be exciting, vibrant, and with so much to offer visitors with its history, culture, music, and of course…food!

For my upcoming visit to the 2022 SHRM Annual Conference & Expo,...

Developing an On-Campus Internship to Help with Student Career Readiness

As the importance of developing student career readiness increases for colleges and universities, there are many opportunities for on-campus employers to reimagine and elevate their on-campus student employment positions as internships. As the Student Employment Specialist at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, I oversee several areas including posting student employment positions, reviewing hiring documents, and unifying student employee training and onboarding. When I started in my role in July 2021, I saw potential in these areas to build an internship experience to allow a student to get exposure to Human Resources...

#CauseTheEffect: What Does it Mean to You? #SHRM22

I was looking at the SHRM22 website today and saw the line: “There’s no cause we can’t effect when we come together as One HR.” It was at that very moment that I finally understood what ‘Cause the Effect’ meant. I won’t lie, I kept hearing that over and over again as I prepared for the SHRM conference, which is just a month away, and I really couldn’t grasp what it meant. And with one sentence on a website that I have probably looked at at least 20 times in the past...
