What's New for the SHRM Store at #SHRM18?

There are a few things I look forward to at the SHRM Annual Conference.  Besides the great content and the ability to network with old and new friends, probably the thing I look forward to is the SHRM Store.  Full disclosure, I am a bookoholic…..I never fail to bring home a number of new books, many that were written by speakers I hear, some by friends in the HR world, and a few that look incredibly interesting.  I have been a volunteer for many years in the SHRM store, helping to set up, run and tear down what is essentially the world’s largest HR bookstore.

In preparation for #SHRM18, I spoke with Sara Bracco, lead specialist in Digital Events and Conferences for SHRM, about what will be new and different for this year’s event as well as what will be tried and true.  The first thing we discussed was the look. “The aesthetic includes various shades of woods, whitewashed brick and some exposed metal to give it a bit of a “refurbished warehouse” feel. If you’re an HGTV fan, you could accurately describe the store’s look as something very “Magnolia-esque. I think #FixerUpper’s Chip and Joanna would be proud,” according to Bracco.

Inside, the bookstore will be organized in three unique sections:

  1. “Booktique”  - featuring speaker books, books approved for recert credits and SHRM-published books;
  2. “Looktique”  - higher-end wearables (think SHRM pashmina for those cold convention center rooms!), t-shirts, desk & travel accessories, I ♥️ HR items, and exclusive SHRM18 merchandise.  We’ll also have some soft seating options; and
  3. “Resource Row” - where attendees can have impromptu chats, learn and demo SHRM’s e-learning program, certification learning system, HR Tools, Member Discount Programs, and external vendors as well).

As far as operations go, new methods will be added (i.e. iPads) to help keep the traditional checkout lines down. There will be online ordering stations that will allow customers to obtain items not in stock in the Store.  As usual, there will be the opportunity to get keynoters and concurrent speakers to sign their books.

Once again I am truly looking forward to seeing the store up and running at SHRM18 and to seeing my friends who will be helping Vince Caldwell, SHRM Store Coordinator, run it.

As more new items and information comes in, I will try and keep you in the loop.  If you have any specific questions, let me know and I will if I can find an answer.
