This is the third in our series of National Volunteer Week blogs- each profile written by SHRM’s Field Services Directors. Today’s piece profiles Carol McDaniel and is authored by Dorothy Knapp. Follow @SHRM all this week for recognition of our amazing volunteers with the #NVW16 and #SHRMLead hashtags.
Many of you know Carol McDaniel, President of the HR Florida State Council, as a fun-loving, outgoing, and very vivacious volunteer! But there is much more to Carol than meets the eye!
In her role as the Director of Talent Acquisition, Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital in St Petersburg, Florida, Carol often interacts with children and parents needing attention and expert medical care. Carol leads the recruitment team, finding doctors, nurses, technicians, and support staff to provide that care for their critically ill pediatric patients. In a very busy HR Department, Carol also manages the HR Social Media, owns and writes for the HR Blog, “Work with Me People” and is the brand ambassador and face of the organization.
In over 13 years as a committed volunteer, Carol has been involved in some very successful initiatives - a volunteer-led state conference that today generates nearly 2 million dollars in revenue, the largest annual leadership conference in the country (over 300 attendees), an annual CHRO Executive Summit, and a highly engaging District Directors’ program. Carol and her executive team visit all 28 Chapters each year to further engage the chapter leadership as well as to motivate leaders into a succession plan that strengthens the council and serves as a model for others. Under Carol’s leadership, HR Florida has consistently been in the top three contributors to the SHRM Foundation! She also believes in sharing her experience and expertise with her colleagues across the state, with SHRM and across the country in support of chapters’ and councils’ success! True leader?? I’d say so!
And what you didn’t know about Carol?! Well, she spent 10 years in the US Air Force as a Protocol Officer. In this role she served under a 3 – Star General and was a key planner in the general’s events, hosted functions and managed the travel and gift budgets. She traveled the world in this role, and while she wasn’t an expert marksman, she certainly was in the line of fire more than once! Today, she doesn’t carry a weapon for her job, but she can command an audience whether it be in her role as President of HRFL or keynoting for a conference! She also serves on the board of the Pasco County Economic Development Council.
And when Carol isn’t driving over the Howard Frankland Bridge in Tampa, FL getting to or from work, she is often thinking of her day ahead or her plans for another great vacation. Carol recently traveled to Napa Valley with her husband Don to celebrate a “milestone” birthday! She also joined several members of her family on a vacation to Ireland where she spent time with her 105 cousins (her mother is one of 23 children from Ireland!) On St Patrick’s Day 2017, all of those cousins will join Carol in NYC to celebrate the holiday and the family heritage! Sounds like another great event she is planning!
Carol and her husband Don have one daughter, Sarah, who graduates from UCF this summer, and a son, Corey who lives in NYC and is a celebrated chef! They would both tell you that their Mom is a bundle of energy and always fun to be around. With her strong Irish heritage, love of great food and wine, along with her added love of shopping, Carol is everyone’s best friend! And, what I really love about Carol is she would give you the world and ask for nothing in return! All said, Carol is another GREAT SHRM Volunteer!
