“If you could only sense how important you are to the lives of those you meet; how important you can be to the people you may never even dream of.”
Our journey together to the 2019 SHRM Annual Conference and Exposition has officially begun! I can promise you it will be a truly special time for everyone in attendance. I’ve attended this event on many occasions since I began my career in HR, but the last serval years have been the most memorable. Last year was my first time participating as a member of the SHRM Blog Squad, and I’m overwhelmed with gratitude to have been invited back, along with so many of my good friends, as an official blogger for this year’s event.
I absolutely love this year’s theme, Creating Better Workplaces, and the possibility and potential it opens up for us all. What an incredible opportunity, and responsibility, it is to be an HR professional right now. Is it the best job ever? Yes! I’ll tell you why.
I wanted to open my first post about #SHRM19 with the quote you see above, which is from the one and only Mr. Fred Rogers. While he’s someone I’ll never have the chance to meet, he remains someone whose impact upon my life is still felt since I was a little boy watching him on television so many years ago. At its core, our work in the HR field is truly about connection. The fundamental truth about our work is that we’re dealing with people’s lives and livelihoods, and building genuine connections with the people we’re serving, founded upon mutual respect and care for one another, is the only way to truly make a difference for them.
We cannot effectively serve those we do not understand.
People live their lives every day with their own hopes, dreams, and challenges. When we hire someone, we should do so knowing that we’re hiring them for everything they bring to the workplace. Everything. To ask someone to leave their personal life at the door is to ask them to check their humanity at the door. And we’re only going to be able to create better workplaces by understanding everything our people bring to work every single day. Better workplaces exist where humanity exists. They are inseparable.
Here’s something else I know to be true about being an HR professional; your work will touch the lives and have an impact on people you may never even meet. Isn’t that incredible? A good day at work can change everything, because kindness has a way of spreading. Good pay and benefits are essential, but the greatest recognition anyone can receive is daily affirmation that their emotions and needs are understood, and that you’re there to provide support to help them as they move towards their hopes and dreams, and overcome their challenges, with courage. Employees’ families have had their lives improved drastically, and that can happen because someone worked tirelessly to create a better workplace for them. I know my son’s life is better because of the career I have and the people that have helped me throughout my life.
My Blog Squad teammates are already hard at work creating incredible content, from new written posts to videos. I encourage you to follow both the #SHRM19 and #SHRM19Blogger hashtags for all of the latest updates about this incredible event. Seeing what they’ve created already, you won’t be disappointed! And I absolutely cannot wait to share more of my thoughts with all of you (feel free to connect with me on Twitter @ChrisOrozco72), and hearing your thoughts as well! Insights, friendships, memories, and the chance to create better workplaces will all be included this June in Las Vegas. We’re in for an incredible journey as we head towards #SHRM19.
Our work can change lives. I know this is true. I’ve seen it happen. And in turn, it can change our world when it needs it the most. I’d say that’s the best job ever!
