The Great 8 of 2014

Each January the SHRMStore reflects back on the previous year and reviews the top sellers in the SHRMStore. These books, DVDs, software and web-based products reveal what products the HR industry is purchasing. Each year we find top sellers in just about every aspect of HR including compliance, employee relations, recruiting, strategy, harassment training, and auditing. However, we look at the top selling eight (8) items to hone in on what is most critical and top of mind for HR professionals. Though it isn’t purely coincidence that ‘eight’ rhymes with ‘Great’!

We also separate out the top-selling SHRM Published books and spotlight them in their own Great 8 list. The top sellers are tallied using SHRMStore sales plus sales through other book selling channels.

On both lists, in 2014 we saw the exit of some of the items that had been on the lists for years. And we saw some new items make their debut on the lists. Plus, we saw some old friends that have made the lists for several years running.

Some changes from 2013 to 2014:

·         Healthcare Reform products did not make the Great 8

·         Global Harmonized System (GHS) products did not make the Great 8

·         Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) tracking management not only made the list but TOPPED the list

·         State-Specific and Federal Compliance products had an increased showing on the Great 8

·         Products on phrases for performance reviews did not make the Great 8

Most of these changes are not surprising. HR professionals have worked hard to educate themselves on Healthcare Reform even before it became law. And, GHS training deadlines were required in 2013. So the fact that those kinds of items did not make the list like they did in 2013 is not a major revelation. The fact that an FMLA product made the list in 2014 when there hadn’t been on in 2013 did not blind side us. FMLA is an ever-growing law for which companies must be in compliance. And state and federal laws are regularly changing so keeping up with them is critical.

Still, the fact that no performance phrases books made the list did give us pause. 2600 Phrases for Performance Reviews by Paul Falcone has made the Great 8 for the past 7 years. There are several possible reasons performance review items didn’t make the list, most probably that our customers may already have the book since they’ve made it a top seller for 7 years! However, it is possible that our customers are using performance review systems that have built-in phrase help. Or, perhaps companies are starting to replace performance reviews with alternate performance measurement and improvement approaches such as regular performance meetings, 360⁰ feedback and KPIs. One thing is for certain, we’ll be interested to see if they make the list in 2015!

What did make the list reveals what is most critical to HR professionals. The topics include:

·         State and federal employment labor law compliance

·         FMLA management

·         Employee performance Issues

·         Emotional intelligence

·         Harassment training

·         Managing the HR department

·         Workplace investigations

·         Employee retention

So with that introduction and the drum rolling in the background, here are 2014’s Great 8!
