#SHRM21: Why Now is the Time To Elevate DEI Effort

This year will be my first time attending the SHRM Annual Conference and Expo and I am so excited to experience the magic that I’ve heard about for so many years. As the Global Director of DEI at my PowerToFly, I’m especially looking forward to the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Track, where renowned speakers will be discussing ways to create inclusive, equitable spaces where everyone can thrive. 

We all know that the past couple of years have been especially historical and eye-opening in regard to equity and inclusion both in and out of the workplace. While many companies and organizations showed support and activism externally, internal efforts to do the same have seemingly lagged behind, especially when considering how marginalized groups consider the impact of their companies’ initiatives. So, going along with the conference's theme, “Now More Than Ever,” here are three reasons why NOW is the time to elevate DEI efforts at our organizations. 

  1. You’ll be able to take control of the direction of your company’s impact and initiative. It seems like everyone has been jumping on the Diversity and Inclusion Bandwagon these days (and in this case, it's a good thing!). If you want to play a role in the way DEI is embedded within your organization’s culture and values, now is the time to step up and make your voice heard. If you wait, you may find that your organization heads down a different path from the one you’d have chosen.
  2. Increase your team’s potential with more perspectives. Creating safe spaces where employees can show up fully as themselves is crucial, because it leaves more room for strategic thinking, problem solving, and authentic collaboration. Leveraging employees’ unique backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives offers new opportunities, unlimited potential, and endless possibilities.
  3. If not now, then when? Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion has always been important; but now, more than ever, we’re seeing the effects it has on employee well-being and company culture. So, why not start now? Now is the perfect time to educate yourself, share ideas, and perhaps join in on the conversation at the SHRM conference!
