#SHRM19 Interview with Kevin Doherty, ICAgile

This 2019 SHRM Annual Conference & Exposition interview is with ICAgile, a certification and accreditation body specializing in agility. Below is a quick Q&A with Kevin Doherty.

Who is ICAgile!? Tell us everything, just as you would someone approaching your booth and asking you this question at SHRM ‘19 in Las Vegas.

ICAgile is an internationally-recognized accreditation and certification body. We work with leading professional training providers around the world to ensure they provide top-quality learning experiences. These accredited courses are designed to set professionals on a journey to true agility, building the knowledge necessary to pursue competence in a range of agile disciplines.

Last year, we released the first certification in the world for HR professionals in Agile Talent. We’re here to get the word out about the imperative for change in human resources, and to help folks find the training they need to keep up with the age of agility.

Let us in on the magic. What’s the learning experience like at ICAgile? How do you utilize your own tech and processes to ensure agility in your employees?

Agility isn’t just our specialty — it’s our lifeblood. At ICAgile, we work hard to ensure we are operating as an agile organization. We work collaboratively and improve continuously. We have a fanatic commitment to a team culture of learning, bringing the agile mindset into everything we do.

What are the biggest challenges companies face when creating their curriculum? How do they overcome those challenges?
It’s easy for even the strongest trainers to fall into a habit of designing courses to be one-way transmissions. We encourage, and require, that all ICAgile-accredited courses feature interactive, synchronous, instructional engagement.

It’s also easy to only focus on “doing agile” by covering standard frameworks and practices, while neglecting to teach how to “be agile.”  Training providers can overcome this by drawing from our methodology-neutral Learning Outcomes, which articulate the rigorous standards behind each ICAgile certification. These Learning Outcomes are contributed by industry thought leaders from around the globe, and zero in on the real knowledge and competency one needs to succeed.

What do you wish more HR professionals and recruiters knew about Agile methodology?

Agility isn’t a framework. It’s a mindset. It’s a culture. And it’s critical for traditional HR departments to adopt that mindset before their unit — or entire organization — is rendered obsolete.

Do these learning experiences and trainings play a role in employee retention?

Absolutely! We encourage curious readers to review the amazing body of reports and studies on the impact of agility in the modern workplace, including those published by our partner, Business Agility Institute. Agile teams have demonstrated not only higher employee retention, but higher employee and customer satisfaction. (Which all goes hand-in-hand, of course!)

For anyone who won’t be able to make it to the ICAgile booth in Las Vegas, what do you want them to know?

No matter your role, or experience with agile, you’re in a great position to advance the culture of your organization. Get familiar with Agile Talent, find accredited training providers, and explore upcoming learning opportunities at icagile.com.
