I still can’t forget the excitement I get, every time, I prepare myself for the 2019 SHRM Annual Conference & Exposition. This year wasn’t any different. I was even more excited than before to meet our ever-growing blogger team; we had so many new faces this year, but it felt like we have known each other for years. Yep, that is the power of social media! It helps you stay connected to your loved ones even if they are miles apart.
On Sunday, June 23, I had the pleasure of attending the #SHRM19 Foundation Brunch at the Venetian, along with a few other #SHRM19Bloggers. It was hosted by SHRM President & CEO Johnny C. Taylor, Jr. along with SHRM Foundation Executive Director, Wendi Safstrom. This was a perfect way to kick start the conference. The SHRM Foundation Brunch was intended to highlight the incredible work of the Foundation to elevate HR as a social force. It provided an in-depth look at SHRM Foundation: Veterans at work, & also gave a sneak peek of all exciting work the Foundation has on the horizon. It was great to meet the SHRM staff. We took a lot of pictures and heard a lot of great stories about the veterans’ program and giving second chances. The food was AMAZING as well!
I wanted to use this platform to share some key takeaways and quotations that I loved the most at #SHRM19. I have listed them below:
1. Session by Martha Stewart:
"You can do anything you put your mind into."
"Encourage people to continue to learn. Don't let them stop"
2. Opening Session by Johnny C. Taylor, Jr.:
"When you give people second chances, you create a new opportunity, YOU create a new world."
"3 billion people go to work every day and EACH ONE of them is affected by HR; impacting lives and shaping culture."
"Our focus shouldn't be on keeping the wrong people out. It should be on bringing the right people in."
3. Brene Brown's Mega Session:
"We can’t ask people to be brave if we don’t teach them how to get back up after they fail. Let’s teach it while they’re onboarding, not after they’re already down."
"Brave leaders are never quiet about hardship; they are never scared to talk about hardships. Shame and blame lead to disconnect and disengagement. "
"We were raised to be brave. BUT we were also raised to not be vulnerable and put ourselves out there... without vulnerability, no bravery."
4. Tim Sackett's session on "Selecting the right Technology for your Department:"
"If you suck at HR, great HR technology will let you suck faster. "
"Don’t be scared into buying a #HRTech suite b/c you’re scared of integrating data"
"We are quickly moving into a world where we don't want to be treated like everyone else. That is why Personalization in HR is needed"
"The future of HR is HR selecting their own technology. We know what we need."
5. Steve Brown's session on Learning to Lead at any Level:
"Your chance will never come unless you step up and say to your leadership "take a chance on me."
"As a leader, you should focus on the light inside of everybody instead of the turmoil."
6. Mega session by Blake Mycoskie, CEO of TOMS:
"The best way to attract talent is by your mission."
"You cannot take care of others unless you take care of yourself."
I would like to conclude by saying that #SHRM19 was a great hit. Like every year, I made a lot of new connections, reunited with my amazing blogger team, and learned about so many new HR technologies that just blew my mind away! I can’t wait to apply all that I have learned into my professional life.
Below are some pictures that I took during the conference. This is just a snapshot of all the fun we had this year! I can’t wait to attend #SHRM20 in San Diego. Will I see you there?
