#SHRM14 HR Motivators: Chanel Jackson

We Know Next is finding and interviewing HR Motivators at the SHRM 2014 Annual Conference & Exposition.  Below is a Q&A with HR Young professional Chanel Jackson.


Q.  What book are you reading right now?

A. "Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit" of Less by Greg McKeown.  As an HR professional you always feel the need to respond to so many people and you find yourself so stretched that you’re not effective. This book helps you to identify and focus on your top priorities to be more productive.   

Q. What advice would you give other leaders about employee engagement?

A. Stick to what employees want! Some companies do a great job of surveying and understanding the voice of the employee while others decide to create their own hypothesis of what employees want or need to foster engagement.

Q. What qualities do you think are most important for strong leadership?

A. Strong leadership requires trust, great listening skills, the ability to plan, execute and effectively communicate what is or will be happening
in a group or organization.

Q. What advice would you give to people who would like to work in the HR profession?

A. HR is a selfless profession; however, it is no longer just for the "people person(s)". Decisions, whether comfortable or uncomfortable, should move the company forward while balancing the needs of the employees. It's a three-legged race, but with many many legs!
