It’s almost time for the SHRM Annual Conference & Exposition - get pumped! You might be meticulously planning out your conference schedule or maybe you’d rather just wing it like me and wander around the conference hall until stumbling upon an interesting session topic. Regardless of your conference preparation style, if you’re a SHRM Student or Young Professional (YP) member, there are a few events you certainly won’t want to miss.
Kick-starting your conference experience is Sunday morning’s pre-conference program: SHRM’s Student & YP Super Sunday Session. This event begins at 8:00 a.m. and concludes at 12:00 noon, with breakfast available from 7:30 a.m. - 8:00 a.m. Besides fueling up for the day and meeting some awesome people (duh, I’ll be there) you’ll also have a chance to hear from a few excellent guest speakers.
First, we’ll connect with Bettina Deynes, SHRM-SCP, VP of Human Resources and Diversity at SHRM and Tom Darrow, SHRM-SCP, Board Chair of the SHRM Foundation. They will help us recognize SHRM’s various award winners. After that inspiring start to the morning, there will be a Conference Orientation where you’ll learn strategies and tips for what to do (and what not to do) at the conference. Come with your questions!
Following the Conference Orientation, we’ll hear from Joe Jones, Ph.D, Director of HR Competencies and Resources Research at SHRM, who will discuss the SHRM Competency Model. This model was developed to help HR practitioners assess their competency needs and build their proficiency, regardless if they are just starting out or are seasoned pros. Stephanie Goetsch, founder of Spark Career Strategy, will wrap-up the session as she shares her trademark networking strategies to identify and build your “tribe,” including how to activate your network to grow your career.
Did someone say networking? The SHRM Young Professionals Advisory Council (YPAC) cordially invites fellow YPs and Students to join us for our annual networking event: Find Your YP Moment. There will be a light reception including food and drinks, paired with rewarding networking opportunities, and awesome prizes! This event will take place on Monday, June 20, from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. in downtown D.C., just steps away from the conference convention center. Location details will be shared upon registration. Make sure you RSVP soon because space is limited! There is no cost to attend and the first hour includes complimentary bar service - so don’t be late!
I can’t wait to see you in our Nation’s Capital along with a few members from SHRM’s YPAC and the #SHRM16 Blog Squad!
