SHRM Staff Recommendations for #SHRM16 in D.C. – Part 4

Meredith Nethercutt, a Senior Associate for Member Advocacy at SHRM, has a fun and exciting list of recommendations for #SHRM16 attendees, too!

Plan a trip to the Kennedy Center, the nation’s busiest performing arts center set on the bank of the Potomac River. If you’re interested in music, dance, or theater, definitely check to see if there are upcoming performances taking place the week of your visit. And while you’re there, check out Meredith’s favorite view of D.C. from the Kennedy Center roof – it’s the ultimate selfie spot!

You can also soak up some sun and get a great view of the Jefferson Memorial, MLK Memorial, and FDR Memorial while taking a paddle boat ride around the Tidal Basin! This is a quintessential D.C. thing to do and a gorgeous way to take in the sights, while also getting some cardio!

Speaking of exercise, another one of Meredith’s favorites for outdoor activities is Roosevelt Island. Choose from three different trails and enjoy a 1.5 mile nature walk with unparalleled scenery. This is the place to be when you just want a break from city-life.

When in D.C. during the summer, you must experience Maryland blue crabs because there’s crabs and then there’s Maryland blue crabs. You’ll taste the difference immediately. There are a slew of seafood restaurants throughout D.C. where you can enjoy a Maryland crab feast, but Meredith’s favorite is Quarterdeck in Arlington.

And, last but not least, about 25 minutes from Washington, D.C. is Old Town Alexandria. Here you can walk along cozy streets and enjoy browsing the boutiques and eating at the eclectic mix of cafes. Locals and visitors alike also enjoy the Old Town waterfront and the many historic attractions along King Street – check out the Ghost & Graveyard Tours for a “spooktacular” good time! Old Town is also home to SHRM headquarters - where all the magic happens!

So, get that planning started.  #SHRM16 is only 3 days away! If you haven’t already done so, register now at annual.shrm.org.
