The 2014 SHRM national conference kicked off today with huge attendance and more non-US representatives than ever before. Hank Jackson talked about a new direction and new things HR must attend to in the future. I as happy to hear about the future stuff because that is what I write about on Future Friday.
Robin Roberts, TV sports and newscaster, told her courageous story of surviving not only cancer but another potentially fatal disease. There were few people left sitting, out of 13,000+, when she asked everyone to stand who had a someone in their life affected by cancer. Emotions ran high when she told the story of her family telling her to “focus on the fight, not the fright.” She made such an impression there was still a line to get her signature on purchased books two hours after she had finished.
The exhibit hall is massive and there seem to be more and more exhibitors every year. I barely scratched the surface.
The night ended with a charity bowling event for the HR bloggers, lead by Dwane Lay. Each year he and Dice.com put on an event for No Kid Hungry, and this year $4000+ was raised. For each $1 spent 10 meals are bought. So a lot of children will be fed because of Dwane and Dice.com
If you want to follow the conference during the week you can follow on Twitter. Look for #SHRM14. I will also report on my blog the events of each day.
