My name is Sean McIntosh. I joined the SHRM Government Affairs Member Advocacy Team last August after two years working as a Senate staffer on Capitol Hill. My passion for change goes back to my high school days as a volunteer at SHRM conferences, and then throughout my college career as president of George Mason University’s SHRM student chapter!
Did you know, that over an astonishing 33 percent of today's workforce is composed of young professionals? I believe we are uniquely positioned to make a tremendous impact on behalf of the HR profession. That is exactly why I am so passionate about workplace advocacy. I believe, that by sharing my voice with lawmakers, not only can I play a role in making positive changes for people in the workplace, but I am investing in myself by expanding my networking and broadening my knowledge and expertise on workplace policy.
As a young professional, I am always looking for ways to invest in my professional development, and I believe that one great opportunity will be at SHRM’s brand-new Advocacy@Work experience. During this two-day premier event, you will have exclusive networking opportunities, the chance to roll up your sleeves and learn how advocacy can make an impact on both policy and within your workplace, and then close out by having to put these skills into action during the Advocacy Day--which is what I’m most excited for!
I can promise you that the moment you step into the Halls of Congress you will come to find that the atmosphere is absolutely electrifying. During Advocacy Day, you will be able to share your personal stories and subject-matter expertise with Members of Congress and staff about real issues affecting the world of HR and your workplace. In my experience, what you might find most rewarding though is that you will see first-hand that your voice can make a difference to your Member of Congress.
No matter if this is your first time to the Hill, or if you are a seasoned advocacy veteran, having the opportunity to directly connect with your legislator in the very location where our nation’s laws are created is a truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I hope you get the chance to experience it with me.
See you on the Hill!
