Quick Shots for #HR and #Business Pros – #SHRM14 Edition

This edition is dedicated to the Society for Human Resources Management’s annual conference. It is “the” event for human resources professionals. Last week, I spent a few days in Orlando listening to speakers, learning about the latest products and services in the expo hall and networking with colleagues.

I hope you like the image – it’s a collage of the photos I took during the conference.

Here are a few things from the event that I’ll be keeping on my radar:

  • President Obama has directed the Labor Department to “modernize” the FLSA regulations. What does that mean for business? This article shares where overtime is headed.
  • SHRM announced more details regarding their new certifications, called the SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP. They have created a webpage where you can find out more details. Of course, you can easily stay up to date with certification announcements by reading SHRM’s WeKnowNext blog.

  • Many people have weighed in regarding their feelings and opinions about the new SHRM certification. Two of the most thoughtful pieces I’ve read are from former SHRM CEO Sue Meisinger and current Membership Advisory Board member Steve Browne. You can check them out here and here.
  • Oh and one more thing about the new certification, it’s based on the HR competency model that was introduced in 2012. Back then, I interviewed Dr. Jeff Pon, SHRM’s chief human resources officer about the model. I hope you’ll check it out. You can also visit the SHRM website for more details about the HR competency model.
  • Human trafficking an HR issue? The answer is yes. Businesses and governments are putting measures in place to address this growing issue. Learn more at the Council for Global Immigration site.

Lastly, mark your calendars! Dr. Eduardo Salas and I will be talking team building and team development on SHRM’s NextChat – Wednesday, July 23 at 3p Eastern. Hope you’ll join us on Twitter for the conversation!
