Got Gratitude?

The calendar has turned, the challenge is on. Let us begin a season of gratitude.

Each day, highlight someone for whom you are grateful. Share your thanks with a story, a note, a laugh or something memorable. Take this month and let the folks in your world know that they are woven into your tapestry.

Be creative, make some new memories, share some old laughs.

To my Human Resources colleagues: who on your teams deserves your gratitude?  Who needs a reminder of their unique value to your team?  Who needs a good laugh...

2020 SHRM VLBM - Socially Distant…Virtually Connected!

Over the years, I have shared with my human resources colleagues that my favorite annual SHRM event is the SHRM Volunteer Leaders’ Business Meeting (VLBM). While it doesn’t have the sheer grandeur and breathtaking excitement of a SHRM Annual Conference, SHRM VLBM brings together the most engaged, active, and enthusiastic volunteer leaders from across the country. The attendee numbers for SHRM VLBM are typically not as high as with some other events but this is usually made up for by the energy of the attendees.

As recently as this fall, we...

Support Employee’s Mental Health During a Pandemic

As I’ve often said here, the workplace is a microcosm of society. And just like we don’t know what the lasting effects of this pandemic will be on all of us, we also don’t know the long term effects on the workforce. But there are some things we do know for sure already, and it’s that the pandemic has certainly affected our collective mental health. Depending on whether your health, your family, your finances or your environment has been affected, no one has been spared some mental hardship.

I came...

Managing Pressure, Emotions, Decisions and People

We usually love being on track with our plans, and the least we can say is that a global pandemic is a significant obstacle to moving them forward. We are stuck if we don’t adjust to the new environment, and it’s forcing us to get out of our comfort zone.

Have you ever counted how many new decisions we have to make in a single day of this new world? We are becoming permanent problem solvers in both our personal and professional lives: how to do errands, meet with friends and...

It’s 2020 and I’m Re-certifying with @SHRM. Want to know why?

In 2001 I got my SPHR certification for the first time. I started my first real HR Manager job and the CHRO wanted to make sure every single HR person on our team had either a PHR or SPHR. I did an eight-week group study course with fellow HR pros studying for the test and I was lucky that my company had also purchased a SHRM study kit.

I remember leaving that test thinking, “I have no idea if I failed or passed! And, boy, I only know a fraction...

It's Good to Be the Boss

Why is becoming a manager so great? Because finally, after all those years of butt-kissing, pride swallowing, teeth clenching agony, it’s your turn on top. You’re the boss now. It’s time for people to kiss your butt and fear your wrath. What you say goes.

That’s how it works, right? It must be because that’s what you’ve witnessed over and over: new managers ascend to their roles and start flexing their new authority.

They manage their teams the way they themselves have always been managed.

From generations of managers, they’ve...

Upskilling and Reskilling for the Digital Workplace

Even before 2020 forced us all into working from our kitchens, home offices, or bedrooms, the world was very much on its way towards removing the necessity for conventional workspaces. Today, younger generations have grown up with lectures and lessons online, while YouTube has also risen to become a better teacher – and imparter of skills – than school ever could.

Readying Yourself For The Digital Workplace

For the digital generation, whose lives almost exclusively exist on the web, the thought of working from home is far less daunting than...

How to Deal with Conflict at Work as a Manager

Originally published on the PowerToFly blog.

When we talk about fostering a diverse workplace, that means recognizing and celebrating all kinds of diversity: of backgrounds, of experiences, of ideas. A diverse team should include racial and gender diversity, of course, but welcoming diversity means also creating a positive workplace for team members who come from different socioeconomic backgrounds, have different levels of education, have lived in different countries, speak different languages, and have different political views.

All of...

Measuring the ROI of Soft Skills

In today’s pandemic, HR faces both an opportunity and a challenge when it comes to investing in workers’ soft skills. The way to capitalize on the former and overcome the latter lies in accurately measuring their benefits for a company.

COVID-19’s fallout has made soft skills an even more valuable commodity. Vast layoffs, personal suffering, severe downsizings and continued economic uncertainty have reinforced the need for leaders who possess top-notch soft skills such as resilience, compassion and agility. Leaders with such traits stand a much better chance of navigating their...
