Millennials – A ‘Rue Rant’

I sure hope the tone of the following doesn’t upset you, but all this talk about Millennials is making me sick.

Every time I turn around, there’s some poll, survey, report, study, or whatever addressing the unique concerns of Millennials in the workplace. Look. It doesn’t matter when you were (or were not) born.  Show up. Do the job well. Try to get along. And on a more personal note, enjoy the fruit of your labor and work on your own life.

I have read far too many articles excusing and explaining and pontificating on the (mis-)behavior of so-called Millennials.  Maybe because I am a so called Generation X-er, I feel…dishonored.

I get it. Some workers have a different perspective. Some have no perspective at all.

This is not new, though. This has always been the case.

Poll – Schmoll! Study – Schmuddy! Survey – Schmurvey!

Hey, Baby Boomers,

  • Show up.
  • Do the job well.
  • Get along.

Oh, wait. You guys already know that and do it.

Hey, Millennials,

  • Show up – even if that means telecommuting.
  • Do the job well – even if you tweet and Instagram about it.
  • Get along – whether or not your every-participant-gets-a-trophy soccer team adequately taught you social skills.  This is the workforce.  If you can’t stomp with the big dogs, stay on the porch.
