It’s the time of year that some of my colleagues affectionately call HR Christmas.
This year, over 16,000 HR professionals are descending on New Orleans for the SHRM Annual Conference. This event brings folks from around the world together to learn, network, and yes, party, each year.
While I’ve only been in town for about 18 hours, I’ve connected with old friends at an intimate dinner for 17 with good food, met several first time attendees to share advice, and found a delightful place to stay and refresh as my introverted senses get overwhelmed from all of the social!
Of those things, my time with the first time attendees has been the most insightful so far. While I was offering guidance and advice, I also was asking what they wanted to get out of the conference. A sampling includes:
“As a solo HR practitioner, I am hoping to meet others who have started outside HR and moved to HR.”
“Free legal advice!”
“Looking forward to hearing from Laszlo Bock about Google and how they grew “
“Walking in public with a drink!”
As you can tell, the desires from the conference are as varied as are the attendees. There is something for everyone and I am hopeful that these first times attendees will get what they want over the next few days.
More to come as #SHRM17 continues from New Orleans.
