How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world. - Anne Frank
I have three talents…none of them are bowling.
I have bowled quite a bit in my 44 years; I used to be on a team in my late 20s but that’s mostly because it came with pizza and beer and, to be honest, there wasn’t much else to do in Juneau, Alaska in the wintertime so I thought, “why not bowl…and eat and drink with friends?”
I wasn’t very good…my only claim to fame is that I can bowl equally (bad) with both hands as I’m ambidextrous…but when your average is about 120, that’s not an impressive claim.
I haven’t bowled in quite some time unless you count helping my son loft one down the lanes but I’m happy to wear bad shoes (provided I have clean socks) if it’s for a good cause!
No Kid Hungry is a good cause!
I will gladly loft the ball, break a fingernail and make a fool out of myself for it.
I believe in No Kid Hungry not because I’m overly nice, not because I am a natural philanthropist, and not because I want to hang out with some great people at SHRM14(although that’s a bonus, I’ll admit).
Nope, I support No Kid Hungry because I was a hungry kid.
I grew up poor and, while my mother tried her best to ensure we were all prepared for school and social life with full bellies and a good meal, she wasn’t always able to meet her goals.
I know what it’s like to be distracted by food.
I know what it’s like to be worried if there will be a decent next meal.
I know what it’s like to feel humiliated or embarrassed because I didn’t have anything to trade or share.
I know what it’s like to feel…and be…empty inside.
Let me tell you something, I couldn’t learn like that.
I couldn’t listen.
I couldn’t concentrate.
I couldn’t sit still.
Ultimately, I couldn’t care enough about doing any of those things.
As an adult, we are no different – think about it.
When you’re hungry at work, how productive are you?
How focused are you?
How energetic are you to do and learn new things?
When you’re hungry, how kind are you?
How forgiving are you?
How patient are you?
This country…this world…needs patient, forgiving, and kind humans in it. We need energetic and developing minds. We need focus and attention to our work and to finding solutions to our problems. We need productivity as there is so much more to do.
This starts with fulfilling a basic need.
Let’s try to make sure less kids are easily distracted by food.
Let’s make certain less kids are worried about their next meal.
Let’s work together so less kids are humiliated or embarrassed about what they have or don’t have to eat.
Let’s commit to making sure no kid feels..or is…empty inside.
And shoot, grab some clean socks and come and bowl with us too!
