This 2019 SHRM Annual Conference & Exposition interview is with BizLibrary, a provider of online learning for growing organizations. Below is a quick Q&A with the company.

Who is BizLibrary!? Tell us everything, just as you would someone approaching your booth and asking you this question at SHRM ‘19 in Las Vegas.

BizLibrary is a comprehensive, off-the-shelf training library with a robust LMS platform! We love all things training and development and are always working with clients to bounce around ideas for improving their programs.

Our solution helps clients overcome business challenges that stand in the way of their growth and success, and our client success managers are experts in their field, providing strategic support and best practice advice to clients of all kinds.

We want to make your experience the best it can be - stop by our booth so we can chat training!

BizLibrary has some pretty diverse clients, including the Dollar General, Pi Beta Phi Women’s Fraternity, Red Roof Inn, and many others. How do you ensure success, despite these organization’s unique goals and needs?

Because each organization has unique needs and goals, we work closely with clients every step of the way to ensure their training initiatives align with their specific business goals.

We take a deep dive into their business challenges and help them understand how training and development can overcome these challenges and find success. Whether it’s suggesting specific training content or providing best practices on how to market a training program, our client success team acts as a strategic partner.

Let us in on the magic. What’s the employee learning process like at BizLibrary? How do you utilize your own tech and processes to remain educated and competitive?

BizLibrary utilizes our solutions for various programs. We have an elaborate onboarding program that involves classroom and online training activities and runs the first week of employment for every employee. The curriculum incorporates learning about our core values and soft skills that will be essential in our learning culture.

We also utilize our platform for our proprietary product training. Our product is always evolving and new features are being released and enhanced. To keep up with the changing product, we develop product training videos to learn about the basic features and functionality that we offer.

We’ve had several manager and leadership training programs incorporate video content into the curriculum, but probably most important is the fact that our content library is unrestricted to employees. All staff have access to our more than 8,000 video lessons on a daily basis. If they want to enhance certain skills on-the-fly, our library is available to them 24/7.

What are the biggest challenges companies face when educating their employees? How do they overcome those challenges?

Employees today are more distracted than ever. According to a study by Deloitte, employees only have 1% of their work week to dedicate to training. Instructor-led, classroom-based learning is time consuming and largely ineffective because employees aren’t able to retain so much information at once. We strive to meet the needs of the modern learner by delivering training in manageable, bite-sized pieces. BizLibrary’s short, video-based training content covers topics important to today’s workforce and can be watched anytime, anywhere and on any device.

Another challenge companies face is engaging their employees. Training is often looked at as a box that needs to be checked every few months, and development can be almost non-existent. Our content library has a variety of formats and styles that cater to the diverse learning preferences of today’s workforce.

What do you wish more HR professionals and recruiters knew about online learning?

Many HR professionals aren’t aware of all the ways they can leverage online learning - it can be an employee benefit and help with recruiting talent, it can be used to close skill gaps in hard skills and soft skills, and it can even contribute to overcoming big challenges like employee turnover or developing leaders.

But, while it can impact all those things, that only happens when HR and training professionals are actively setting goals and expectations for using the solution, communicating the benefits to employees, and ensuring leaders and managers are advocates for using online learning as a part of the overall training program.

Online learning technology can be a big investment, so beyond the content and technology, a major factor to assess is how involved a vendor is with providing support and strategy, and receiving feedback from clients.

That partnership piece is crucial to really see the impact online learning can deliver, and that’s why our client success team at BizLibrary helps clients align their overall training goals to organizational goals, rather than only focusing on how they’re using our solution.

How important is education to employee retention?

Numerous surveys and studies have proven that employees today expect their employers to provide proper training and opportunities for professional development. LinkedIn’s 2019 Workforce Learning Report revealed that 94 percent of employees would stay with their company longer if it invested in opportunities for them to learn and grow!

People in the workforce today recognize that the skills necessary to perform in their current or desired roles are constantly shifting, and if they aren’t receiving regular training then they won’t be able to advance their career as hoped.

Besides improving skills, the investment itself is a big indicator to employees that they are valued, and that creates reciprocal loyalty. When employees see how a company is dedicated to helping them grow, their return on that investment is higher engagement, greater productivity, and dedication to the company’s mission and vision.
