#CauseTheEffect: What Does it Mean to You? #SHRM22

I was looking at the SHRM22 website today and saw the line: “There’s no cause we can’t effect when we come together as One HR.” It was at that very moment that I finally understood what ‘Cause the Effect’ meant. I won’t lie, I kept hearing that over and over again as I prepared for the SHRM conference, which is just a month away, and I really couldn’t grasp what it meant. And with one sentence on a website that I have probably looked at at least 20 times in the past few months, I finally had that aha moment. So I started thinking, what is something that I could change.

For starters, I can change the mindset that people have about HR’s reputation. I know what you are thinking, “people think negatively about HR? That can’t be right?!” But unfortunately, it is true. Either people have had poor experiences in the past with their HR representative, or they see the HR department as overly bureaucratic, making it impossible to get things done. Sometimes, people see us as the gatekeepers or rule enforcers and don’t understand why we have to be so objective and strict. There are some people out there that will flat out tell us, they don’t have a need for HR. Usually, they are the people that need us the most.

So here’s what I say, let’s be the reason they change their mind. Let’s help them PIVOT! Let’s change their perspective and be the reason that they recognize the full potential we can offer by thought partnering with them. Let’s show them how we achieve our purpose and make an impact in their careers. We might not be able change the culture of our companies single handedly, but one person can make a difference, and one person can start the change. Let’s be that one person and pretty soon, word will get around because as we all know, people talk.
