Recently, more than 1,000 of the Society for Human Resource Management's (SHRM's) tireless volunteer leaders came to Washington, D.C., for the Society's annual Volunteer Leaders' Summit (VLS). This event brings chapter leaders from across the U.S. together to connect as well as to gain new skills and ideas for managing their local chapters. The SHRMStore hosted a bookstore specifically for this group. The top-selling titles give us a unique glimpse into the challenges and opportunities our chapter leaders are gearing up for in 2017 and the tools they will use to help them meet the challenges.
This year, while many HR subjects were popular—leadership, meeting management and performance, for example—the topic that attracted the most attention was career and self-development. Books that dealt with identifying personal brand and HR peer examples were among the top sellers.
The VLS provided in-depth content and sessions on important fundamentals such as setting the groundwork for success as a volunteer leader, financial fundamentals, marketing and team motivation. And the speakers who presented the topics inspired attendees with engaging presentations, including a brief history of dance from speaker Judson Laipply.
These sessions galvanized attendees and helped them find even more creative and effective ways to bring HR professionals in their areas together. However, it was obvious that attendees at VLS saw developing themselves as critical to the overall goal of growing their chapter.
