Almost Live from Las Vegas at the SHRM Talent Management Conference

I’m wrapping up three days of great key note presentations, awesome breakout sessions, and a vendor exposition covering a broad offering of Talent software, products and services at the 2018 SHRM Talent Conference & Exposition.

With Fast Company’s Co-founder Bill Taylor kicking off the conference on Monday morning, and Gretchen Rubin, the best-selling author on the topic of "Happiness" closing keynote this morning, close to 1,600 attendees were treated to fascinating learning opportunities.

For me, the Tuesday lunch general session with Jacob Morgan was the highlight. Jacob is best known as a futurist and author. He dove in to the topic of focusing on the employee experience to create an engaged workforce. I rarely take notes during keynotes, but Jacob kept the audience focused and dished on culture, technology, and physical space as the three ingredients to creating a great employee experience…

The breakouts covered such topics as artificial intelligence (AI), texting, and performance management. They were delivered in traditional and Smart Stage formats. I sat in on a couple of sessions wrapped around my own workshops on eliminating the traditional review format and discussing how to embrace AI in talent processes.

The topic of texting as part of the recruiting communication process seemed to be the hot topic this year as businesses of all sizes look to communicate and follow up with candidates in real time.

The expo hall was buzzing with activity and networking. The most notable were the folks at the CROWDED booth that used real toilet bowls to suggest flushing your old - style resume and processes down the tubes. A funny and eye- catching display that had folks laughing and texting pictures throughout the conference.

My big take away is that the world of talent has already changed dramatically this past year and we all need to stay on top of the new and exciting technologies being infused into the space.

I know next year’s conference will be in Nashville and I am already planning for it.

The next stop on my Last HR Jedi Tour is the 2018 SHRM Annual Conference & Exposition in Chicago this June where I will be doing my Smart Stage presentation on the Dark Side of HR- Part 2 along with a repeat of my Performance Review Dilemma as a Mega session.

Can’t wait to see you all in Chicago!
