A #SHRM22 Interview with Lori Kleiman SHRM-SCP, President, HR Topics

With 30 years of HR and business experience – Lori has walked in your shoes. A recovered HR Generalist, she built a consulting company that she sold to Gallagher after 7 years and then reinvented her business – HR Topics -  training, speaking and developing content for HR professionals. Lori delivers facts, tips, tricks and best practices in a way that appeals to human resource leaders: with a sense of humor, a bias toward actions that improve operations immediately, and practical resources to support progress.

Hello Lori!  So excited to get the opportunity to “interview” you for the SHRM22 #CauseTheEffect Blog! I’ve had the opportunity to hear you speak many times over the years, and I’m super excited to see you on the roster again this year for National SHRM!

Tell us a little bit about your background and how it led to your decision to champion and support the HR Department of One?

I started in my family business and was an HR DOO. I than started a consulting company for businesses that did not have a HR function – essentially an outsourced HR DOO.  I LOVED IT!  It grew in 7 years to be 6 employees and almost a million dollars in sales. I sold to Arthur J Gallagher in 2007 and helped them grow the Chicago business and take the model national. HR DOO is in my blood!

Can you give us some insight on what your presentations are all about? Where did the inspiration come from and what do you hope people can take out of it?

The inspiration is from the idea that there is no need to reinvent to  wheel! Someone has been there and done that.  My programs are intended to give practical, actionable advice to the HR DOO.  Not only what I have done – but getting the audience involved so we all contribute. With the consulting practice I have seen an awful lot and share lessons learned, but there is always something new!

What’s the best advice you’d give someone starting out as an HRDOO?

Make connections – get involved in your community. Definitely be a member of your local SHRM chapter to help brainstorm ideas and have a resource. Then get involved with other HR DOOs nationally so you can ask questions and share resources.

Given this conference is centered around “Cause the Effect,” what about that particularly resonates with you?

We MUST stand up and be seen.  I see too many HR people waiting for their invitation to the leadership team. I love the theme because I really believe that no one is going to ask us – we have to be the one to take the initiative and show why HR should be at the table.

What should people be thinking about before they come to the conference to ensure get the most out it?

What are your goals (business and personal) for the next 18 months?  What programs speak to those ideas. There are so many amazing sessions, you can’t get to all of them. Which will provide ACTIONABLE take aways that will allow you to go back and show your organization how you add value immediately.
