This a 2019 SHRM Annual Conference and Exposition Interview #SHRM19 Interview is with The House of Purpose, a people development firm that specializes in the use of emotional technology and research to better productivity. Below is a quick Q&A with the CEO and Founder, Javier Santos.

Who is The House of Purpose!? Tell us everything, just as you would someone approaching your booth and asking you this question at #SHRM19 in Las Vegas.

The House of Purpose is a Canadian diverse-owned and operated people development firm.

We blend active learning with coaching to help people put their emotions to work and become more productive and happier.

There are three key aspects that make us unique:

  1. We use the latest in Emotional Technology*.

  2. We are a diverse team of business and mental-health professionals and we love putting emotions to work, and

  3. We create real lasting learning experiences without the use of IT.

We serve all types of organizations such as Canada’s largest winery and the Canadian Government in English French and Spanish.

*Emotional Technology is the collection of recent evidence-based tools and frameworks that stem from Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience, Psychology, Neuro-Psychoanalysis, Neuroleadership, Executive Coaching, and Positive Psychology, that explain how the human brain and mind work.

Let us in on the magic. What’s the learning process like at the House of Purpose? How do you utilize your own tech and processes to ensure the development of essential skills?

We create lasting learning experiences based on new emotional technology and by blending two proven techniques:

a) Active Learning in group experiential sessions where people learn new concepts and tools to help them address key emotional issues at work, and

b) Individual and/or Group Coaching to support participants as they learn by doing in their everyday life.

What are the biggest challenges companies face when attempting to develop their employees? How do they overcome those challenges?

The biggest challenge in people development today is that companies are not working with their employees’ emotions and/or develop their employees emotional skills. This is because until recently we did not have the science and understanding on how our brains and minds work, leaving room to misconceptions such as the role of emotions in productivity and fulfillment at work. The House of Purpose offers  many different solutions to overcome those challenges and help employees put their emotions to work to become happier and more productive at work.
What do you wish more HR professionals and recruiters knew about your services?

We put emotions to work by combining new science and evidence-based models with proven active learning and coaching methods.

How important is employee development and education in employee retention?

According to the latest employee surveys, personal development seems to be the most important aspect after salary in keeping employees productive and happy. However, the issue are not only with those leaving the company, but also with those who become unproductive and disengaged; even toxic, but never leave.

For anyone who won’t be able to make it to The House of Purpose booth in Las Vegas, what do you want them to know?

We put employees’ emotions to work to make them more productive and happy.
