A #SHRM19 Interview with Simon

This is a 2019 SHRM Annual Conference and Exposition (#SHRM19) interview is with Simon, a global property group who also specializes in corporate gift cards. Below is a Q&A Jerald Leuthold, the Director of Giftcard Business Development.

Who is Simon!? Tell us everything, just as you would someone approaching your booth and asking you this question at #SHRM19 in Las Vegas.

Simon is a global leader of premier shopping, dining, entertainment and mixed-use destinations. Our properties across North America, Europe and Asia provide community gathering places for millions of people every day and generate billions in annual sales.

Let us in on the magic. What’s the recognition process like at Simon? How do you utilize your own tech and processes to reward your employees?

At Simon, we continually look for ways to motivate and inspire our employees through recognition. We have employee of the month and year awards. In addition, we also have an annual recognition program called Awards of Excellence, where we recognize top performers in multiple categories for their hard work throughout the year.

What are the biggest challenges companies face when rewarding their employees? How do they overcome those challenges?

It can be difficult for companies to find something that is meaningful across a wide range of employee tastes and preferences. Gift cards are a powerful tool that have become a favorite of employees. When receiving a gift card, recipients can select products or services that resonate with their individual tastes.

What do you wish more HR professionals and recruiters knew about corporate gifting?

The ease of recognizing employees; whether from a full-fledged incentive program to spot awards acknowledging employees that have exceeded expectations, Simon Giftcards allow companies to provide their employees with a meaningful reward. Personalized cards can be delivered in as little as two business days - giving companies the ability to gift quickly and efficiently making it easier for employees to be recognized.

How important is employee recognition in employee retention?

HR practitioners understand that employee productivity and loyalty increases when they feel appreciated and are recognized for their work. With unemployment at record lows, it’s imperative for companies to consider employee recognition along with culture, pay, and benefits. Employees want to feel like their work is contributing to the greater purpose of the organization. Recognizing employees for their hard work and contributions drives intrinsic motivation, which leads to a higher level of engagement, productivity and retention.
