A #SHRM19 Interview with PsyBar

Who is PsyBar?! Tell us everything, just as you would someone approaching your booth and asking you this question at the 2019 SHRM Anunual Conference and Exposition at (#SHRM19) in Las Vegas.

We are the company that, 16 years ago, introduced and promoted the current national standard for fitness for duty evaluations to EAPs. This includes independent doctors, objective psychological testing, screening for violence in every assessment, collateral contacts with employers and others who know the employee, and detailed standardized instructions to doctors on how to do the best assessments.

Let us in on the magic. What’s the assessment process like at PsyBar? How do you utilize your own tech and practices to evaluate your own employees to ensure efficiency?

PsyBar has decades of performance data on many of our forensic psychologists and psychiatrists in 1,800 locations across the country. To our knowledge, this network is approximately 7 times the size of that held by any other similar specialty organization, and prevents PsyBar from having to resort to lesser quality teleassessments. Our doctor panel helps us use tried and true doctors for 97 percent of our evaluations, rather than try out untested doctors on our customers. We identify the best doctors with our customized computerized system that quickly helps us locate the best professionals in every area of the country.  We have a collaborative relationship with our doctor panel as, for example, an in-house PsyBar psychologist reviews absolutely every report before it goes to our customers.

PsyBar is one of America’s largest specialty providers of medical evaluations for employers and insurers, serving as consultants to half of Fortune 500 companies. What, in your opinion, has contributed to this success?

Our clients have seen that our reports are consistently written clearly, and are supported by objective data. They have also benefited from our high quality customer service, delivered by seasoned PsyBar case managers.

What are the biggest challenges companies face in regards to evaluating their employees? How do they overcome those challenges?

The biggest challenge some employers continue face is navigating an FFD evaluation when they do not have clear processes in place. PsyBar’s dedicated clinical team serve as subject matter experts and can assist Employers in developing sound policies and practices to ensure successful navigation of the FFD evaluation.

What do you wish more HR professionals and recruiters knew about medical evaluations?

  1. That objective psychological testing is critical.

  2. That there are major differences between evaluations done by treating doctors, and those done in a forensic context, such as fitness for duty evaluations.

  3. They can be an important tool to help valued employees get the help they need and remain a critical part of your workforce.

How important are evaluations in employee retention, post health-related absences?

FFD evaluations prior to a return to work are critical as they ensure your employee is intact from a behavioral health or cognitive perspective to perform their essential job functions and not pose any type of threat to themselves, other employees or the public. These evaluations help ensure a mentally well employee, promote confidence among other employees that may have concern knowing there is a mechanism in place to ensure their colleagues are fit for their job and promote longevity in the workforce.

For anyone who won’t be able to make it to the PsyBar booth in Las Vegas, what do you want them to know?
