This is 2019 SHRM Annual Conference and Exposition (#SHRM19) interview is with Marketplace Chaplains, a provider of employee care services. Below is a quick Q&A with Jason Brown, the Chief Marketing Officer.
Who is Marketplace Chaplains!? Tell us everything, just as you would someone approaching your booth and asking you this question at #SHRM19 in Las Vegas.
Since 1984, Marketplace is the original, leading, largest and most relevant employee care service provider today serving over 950 private and public companies across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, England and providing service support to China, Korea, Malaysia and Brazil. Realizing high usage rates (50 to 75 percent), Marketplace is frequently voted the number one benefit by employees. HR Professionals frequently state they don’t know how they ever got along before without a Care Team, and measurable ROI is an outcome with greater retention, safety, teamwork and productivity.
If a company takes care of their employees first, the customer loyalty and business success will follow. Let us in on the magic. What’s the care process like at Marketplace Chaplains? How do you utilize your own services to ensure your employees are taken care of?
The magic is a Care Team- men, women, bilinguals, diverse and professionall -trained Care Team members who make regular, weekly visits or contacts to employees which develop into relationships of trust and confidence.
The service is neutral from company operations, strictly confidential and employees choose If, When, Where and What they want to talk about with their Care Team!
We have over 1600 Care Team members across North America and a National Care Center with over 65 employees, and we all have Chaplain Care assigned and available to us and our family members. This month alone, Care Team Members will make over 17,000 worksite visits!
What are the biggest challenges companies face when utilizing your services? How do they overcome those challenges?
It’s not in the utilization, in fact, most are surprised when they see the amount of usage in the confidential activity reports and the accompanying response we were able to provide employees or their family members, 24-7, nationwide.
The biggest challenge is the automatic initial responses we hear, especially to term Chaplain- “we can't do that, we have a multicultural diverse workforce, religion and work don’t mix, etc.” The facts are that Marketplace is not a religious program, nor church at work. All 4,200 worksite locations we serve every day are very diverse and unique, however we focus on the commonalities all employees deal with: a rebellious teenager, elderly parent, finances, stress, trouble with a coworker, loneliness, depression, grief, illness, death, anxiety, hopelessness, etc. We serve everyone the same and even have many company owners from a multitude of backgrounds who have partnered with us to simply help take care of their people!
What do you wish more HR professionals and recruiters knew about chaplain care?
It works. It is proven. Police and fire departments, professional sports teams, the U.S. Congress and thousands of companies have Chaplains..and Marketplace has a solution for your unique company.
How important is the right care in employee retention?
Critical. HR professionals know money and benefits are farther down the list as to why people are attracted or stay with an organization. Feeling cared for and valued, as well as the employee’s relationship with their direct supervisor are the two most important elements of retention, and Marketplace helps support both of those areas.
