How to Make the Most of the Virtual Experience at #SHRM22

While I certainly am excited to be attending SHRM22 live and in person this year, I know there’s many folks who can’t join me in New Orleans, whether it’s company policy against travel, budgetary restrictions or schedule constraints. However, what an amazing opportunity virtual attendance provides! You can experience the conference in a whole different way! We can agree that of the most significant drawbacks of virtual conferences is the lack of natural social situations. You aren’t in rooms with other attendees, shaking hands with speakers, sharing drinks with colleagues, or catching up over dinner out on the town. But virtual events can include networking opportunities too. Look for information about them in emails or social media marketing...

#SHRM22: To Cause the Effect…We Must Lead

Appropriately, the theme for the 2022 SHRM Annual Conference & Expo is “Cause the Effect.” While this phrase may have a different meaning for everyone, for me it means “bringing about positive change to your workplace through your individual actions.” Further, I believe that it means to be proactive rather than solely reactive to the countless challenges that we as HR professionals face on an ongoing basis. Most importantly, I feel that if we want to “cause the effect,” we must lead.

Leadership is often a touchy subject, especially...

#SHRM22: Take Charge of Change: How HR Professionals Can Transition from "Reactive Change Receivers" to "Proactive Change Leaders"

Sound familiar?  So often the Human Resource professionals I work with (at all levels - often including senior management ranks) lament that...

Human Resources is dead. People Operations is here.

Lately, I’ve seen companies shifting internal nomenclature, changing the title of their human resources department to people operations. A practice early adopted by progressive tech companies, people operations puts empathy (not policy) at the heart of human resources. Policy and a holistic suite of benefits are table stakes. A people operations team, for example, might value the experiences and insights provided by different employee resource groups (or ERGs) to build an inclusive workplace culture.

It encourages the executive leadership team to adopt an “employee-first” approach to reduce attrition, improve productivity and...

Is Success without Well-Being Really Success?

The Great Resignation is really a Great Reevaluation of how we live, how we work and what we need to truly thrive. What people are resigning from is a culture of burnout and a broken definition of success. More and more people have come to see that chasing an idea of success based solely on the metrics of money and status isn’t sustainable. It’s like sitting on a two-legged stool — sooner or later we’re going to fall off. What we’re seeing is a shift to a way of living...
