#SHRM22: Cause and Effect

I have a penchant for grammar. I like it. Diagraming sentences is a favorite. I even taught junior high English for a couple of years right after graduating with my BA from Saint Joseph’s University. One of the more common errors I found was students using “affect” when they meant “effect.” Time and again, I would tell the 8th Graders to ask themselves the question: Is what you’re describing the result of a cause?

As we work in human resources, we will be instruments affecting others’ lives. Our creation and enforcement of...

#SHRM22 - Meet Me in New Orleans for Coffee & Beignets?

I have had the opportunity to visit New Orleans only once a few years ago, and by coincidence, it was for also for an annual conference, albeit for my wife’s profession. While she was spending most of her days at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center for her conference, I was able to explore the city and found it to be exciting, vibrant, and with so much to offer visitors with its history, culture, music, and of course…food!

For my upcoming visit to the 2022 SHRM Annual Conference & Expo,...

#CauseTheEffect: What Does it Mean to You? #SHRM22

I was looking at the SHRM22 website today and saw the line: “There’s no cause we can’t effect when we come together as One HR.” It was at that very moment that I finally understood what ‘Cause the Effect’ meant. I won’t lie, I kept hearing that over and over again as I prepared for the SHRM conference, which is just a month away, and I really couldn’t grasp what it meant. And with one sentence on a website that I have probably looked at at least 20 times in the past...

An Interview with #SHRM22 Expo Vendor Honest Jobs!

One of my favorite things about being on the blogger team for the 2022 SHRM Annual Conference & Exposition is chatting with speakers and vendors to learn more about them and create some pre-conference buzz! Before #SHRM22 in New Orleans, I have a few blog posts lined up to introduce you to speakers and vendors!

As I was looking through the vendor list, I knew I had to feature Honest Jobs and their CEO and Founder, Harley Blakeman. Harley and I have met in person at SHRM annual conferences before, and...

From Sessions to Connections: Embracing the #SHRM22 Experience

I am excited to be attending the 2022 SHRM Annual Conference. My first experience in 2021 was twenty years in the making. The memories made, such as a selfie with Steve Browne, inspiration from Opal Lee and Michael Phelps, meeting amazing HR professionals from across the U.S., India and Nigeria and insight gained will stay with me the rest of my HR career.

I am frequently asked what took me so long to make it to the “Super Bowl of HR Conferences.” I, like many of you am an HR professional who...

#CauseTheEffect: Stay in Pursuit

“Cause The Effect” is the campaign for the upcoming SHRM conference. It’s like purpose… many times we aren’t quite sure how or what to do to create impact, but when we focus on the pursuit, it will appear in many ways including inspiration.

When I started my career helping companies relocate talent, I wasn’t sure what my “cause” was other than moving people’s stuff, or how I could effect change in my personal life or my career. I was just trying to make enough money to support my family. But...

#SHRM22: What does it mean to “effect”? / #CauseTheEffect

The theme for the 2022 SHRM annual conference is “Cause the Effect.”  But, what does it really mean to effect?  According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary (2022), effect can be defined as the state of being operative, or the act of making an impression, or the ability to influence others.  Each of these terms serves to highlight the tremendous benefits to be realized by participating (virtually or in-person) in this year’s conference, June 12th – 15th.

Being operative requires HR professionals to have understanding of current...
