A #SHRM17 Interview with Vivek Patel

i don’t believe there is a more-progressive suite in the tech space than that of Human Resource related technology. Call it HCM or HRIS or HRIT, so much has happened so fast and there is a technical solution for every employee support function.

The questions can be daunting for an HR Professional seemingly forced to turn IT expert:

  • To Cloud or not to Cloud?
  • SSO or SAML?
  • Which system integrates with what?
  • Is there are element of gamification to jazz up the user experience?

Who better to address these questions than the non-partisan Society for Human Resource...

All In at SHRM17 (From A Distance)

This Sunday will be the start of the annual Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) annual conference in New Orleans. For HR professionals like me, this is the Super Bowl of our year. It’s a time where HR people from all over the world get together to learn, to develop some relationships, and to have a little fun. This year’s theme is “All In.” While I won’t physically be “all in” in New Orleans, I will be all in from Chicago following along.

I have been to a few annual conferences...

SHRM’s Annual Conference – so many sessions, events, networking activities- honestly, the biggest challenge is finding a few minutes to catch your breath.  Well, for those fortunate enough to join us in New Orleans we have the perfect solution- #Take10 in the Connection Zone!  These interactive sessions- led by the #SHRM17 Bloggers- will inform, inspire, and invigorate attendees.  And, as a bonus we will be livestreaming several of them on Facebook.

As SHRM’s Director of Social Engagement it’s been my honor to host nearly 40 of the top HR Influencers each...

12 Mobile Apps for Easier Travel #SHRM17

My mobile phone is my most important piece of technology I own. It’s the first thing I reach for when I wake up and the last thing I touch as I set my alarm before I go to bed. Aside from ensuring I get a proper wake-up call each morning when I travel, my mobile phone helps to enhance my travel as well as conference experience. It quickly connects me to attractions, events, and happenings while also maximizing my time in the city I happen to be in.

I’ve compiled...

Thanks, Hank

The 2017 SHRM Annual Conference & Exposition, this year in New Orleans, is going to have an underlying theme to it this year.  This will be the last year that we will hear from Hank Jackson our leader. While I am not an insider of SHRM at the highest levels, I have been around a long time and have seen how the organization has moved forward and grown under his leadership.  When Hank took over, a lot of things needed a lot of attention. And Hank guided...

I have been fortunate to have been able to attend the national SHRM conference twice. I have a boss who feels education is important and encourages all his employees to attend national conferences in their field. I asked on a whim for SHRM14 (Orlando) & learned a lot, though I was completely overwhelmed. So many people, sessions, so much walking! I kept to myself for the most part, but did reach out & got a ride to the HRCI certification party. I ended up meeting two ladies that were staying at the same hotel and we hung out...

HR on Purpose at #SHRM17

SHRM17 is upon us and the energy level is building. I know that each year I attend there’s a mix of anticipation and eagerness to explore and see the conference has to offer. It’s a huge, bustling environment that can seem overwhelming. However, I’d ask you to take a different look at the Annual Conference & Exposition. Break it down into chunks and sort them out in ways that make sense for you. You could have a block for Speakers & Sessions, a block for the Vendor Exposition, a block for...

An Interview with Brett Reizen, President and CEO of TicketsatWork #SHRM17

I watched most of the 2017 NBA Finals (Go Warriors!) on my 50-inch high-definition TV while sitting on my old, comfy couch. It doesn’t get much better than that. Unless of course I had tickets to the game and could sit courtside. In my opinion, there is simply no better experience than seeing a live sporting event – listening to the roar of the audience and feeling the tangible intensity from the players and coaches.

I recently had an opportunity...

Mindfulness at #SHRM17 - An interview with Marissa Afton

If you suggest to Marissa Afton that she has beautiful red curly hair, she’s likely to give you a quizzical look. There is no denying she’s got some curls but she doesn’t consider herself a redhead.

Perhaps being a redhead is a state of mind.

Mindfulness - that’s also a state of mind.

Ms. Afton has been practicing mindfulness since she was in college, and she’s been an advocate ever since. Her presentation, Training the Mind to Enhance Individual and Organizational Performance, is occurring on Wednesday, June...
