I can’t believe we are just about a month away from welcoming 20 thousand + of our HR friends & colleagues friends here in my home city of Chicago!
With so much to do; and a lot of action happening with a short few days, I wanted to give a little local perspective with some tips on how best to take advantage of your time at #SHRM18.
- Check out Choose Chicago www.choosechicago.com
Free time is going to be rare while you at the conference with long days and many conferences to attend. If you do manage to come in early, or stay late, or find a few hours of free time; check out the Choose Chicago website. With so many different restaurants, bars, live music, culture & shows; there’s something that’s going to catch your attention & this website does a great job of bringing it all together to help you choose.
2 of my favorites you can’t go wrong with; Lou Malnatis for Pizza; Portillo’s for hot dogs (and their chocolate cake!). Little hidden gem for a nightcap check out 3 Dots & a Dash or Cindy’s Rooftop.
- Rent a bike with Divvy bikes www.divvybikes.com
Most hotels are in “the loop” in the heart of Chicago. McCormick place where our conference is being held a few miles south at McCormick place. You could try to find a cab, or ride down and back; but traffic can be backed up for miles.
Instead, rent a bike with Divvy; Chicago’s bike sharing program. For $3 a trip; you get to rent a bike for 30 minutes which should be plenty to get you back to your hotel. There’s a great lakefront path that goes for miles so you are out of traffics way. Little tip; ride it 3.6 miles north from the conference venue to Navy Pier and enjoy a great view of the city, lake, and enjoy some good food & drinks on their outdoor beer garden.
- Download & log into the SHRM App! http://annual.shrm.org/shrm18-app
With so much to do, and so little time; you’ll want to have a great organizer and place to find out where & when everything is happening!
SHRM recently launched their 2018 Conference app where you can use their city guide, navigate your way thru the conference hall with the maps, check out the speaker schedules including their bios, like the one below on Rusty who I did a Q&A session here on SHRM and on my “Unraveling HR – How Success Happens” podcast.
I hope these tools help you out a bit in Chicago. Contact me on LinkedIn or Twitter if you have other Chicago questions or want to connect in person when you are in town.
Looking forward to seeing you all soon!
